Gr. 1-3. Two professional ballerinas have collaborated on this striking staging of the classic ballet, based on James Kudelka's National Ballet of Canada production. The narrative reads smoothly, but it's the art that steals the show. Peopled with doll-like folk-art figures, Kupesic's full-page illustrations, each one opposite a page of text decorated with a gilded motif^B, are intense with luminous colors, their rich details making up for their lack of movement. Particularly impressive are the renderings of textured fabrics, draped, folded, and pleated, which seem almost touchable. Sundry versions and formats of this holiday favorite exist--from picture books by Vladimir Vagin and Deborah Hautzig (with illustrations by Diane Goode) to pop-ups, photographic re-creations, and even Advent calendars. What this version offers, along with visual elegance, is a simplified, straightforward telling that parents wanting to brief children before a performance will especially appreciate.

“Kupesic’s ornately detailed oil paintings have an Eastern European feel, with rich hues and gilded pages. A distinctly different presentation of a familiar story – a handsome [purchase].”
