This book is packed full of interesting stories, biographies, etc. and is very useful for scholarship, though a Tibetan language index would make it much easier to use (I docked a star for that).The other reviewer is correct in saying that this is not a typical Western style history. One should not expect that from a book authored by a Tibetan. Tibetan histories are typically about lineage - person X went to place Y, where they received initiation B from teacher Z. This is not a "Buddhism for Westerners" book, it is a traditional history of the Nyingma lineage. If you're looking for the types of information found in the latter, you will not be disappointed.

Not Much 'History',

Although this book is meticulously detailed and masterfully edited and translated, I was disappointed by it. Contrary to the book's title, it is not a history of the Nyingma school nor a presentation of its doctrines. Rather, it is a fairly commonplace history of the dharma and overview of the path from the perspective of the Nyingma school. Much of the book is presented as a history, but it is simply a series of biographies of different lineage masters and it does not comprise a 'history' by any contemporary Western standard. For anyone who is already fairly versed in Tibetan materials, you will have to read quite a bit before you find anything new or interesting. There is some information burried in the usual "divisions of the vehicles" and "different types of motivations" kind of material, and the many accounts of the miraculous lives of the Nying-thig saints. I'm not sure who will find this material useful, as on the one hand it is too long and academic to be of interest to the general reader, while on the other hand it is too sparse of information or details for the scholar.

The two volumes are both extremely useful for anyone seriously interested in Buddhist philosophy in general and Tibetan Buddhism in particular. Dudjom Rinpoche gives a thorough, encyclopedic overview of all Buddhist schools, seen from the Nyingma (i.e. The Great Perfection, or Dzogchen) perspective, and an account of the history of the Nyingma lineage is given. The reference volume contains amongst other items a brilliant bibliography. Dudjom Rinpoche's work is not easy reading, but demonstrates the complexity of Buddhist thinking and practice. Gyurme Dorje's translation is annotated and is in itself a remarkable feat in buddhology and tibetology.

One could not categorise Nyingma School as an ordinary book. It is a translation of teachings and the pure mind retrospective knowledge of the amazing activities of past masters from the eminent Dudjom Rinpoche, one of the greatest Tibetan Buddhist masters of this century and a living Buddha. His incarnation has reappeared. An ordinary person could spend 20+ years digesting this discourse. This particular book, which is a cheaper and more economical printing of a two-book box set, is a chance for anyone to access this superlative material much more easily. Recently, a bookseller in Kathmandu wanted to charge me $USD 500 for the original box set. Years ago, you could buy it for about $200. The price has shot through the sky! So, if you want a collector's item, buy the original box set but if you simply want the wisdom and inspiration, this book will rip your mind apart.

This tome is a must for those interested in theory and practice in the Nyingma tradition. The section on the 9 yanas is excellent. It will be a lifelong reference work for me.
