Book Description

Oct. 1 2008 The Octonauts

In this third Octonauts storybook, the crew meets a fish with a giant frown on his face. He looks so glum that he's causing everyone around him to feel down also. Our heroes need to find a way to cheer him up! The Octonauts try music-making, field trips, miniature golf, and even a baking marathon, but can they make their new friend smile?

Created by popular illustration and design team, MEOMI, the Octonauts will excite the imaginations of kids and adults of all ages.

“Blame it on the Olympics. With Beijing behind us, thoughts turn to Vancouver, then Meomi, the team that designed the 2010 mascots. Next thing you know, we remember there is a new Octonauts book coming out in October. Why write about clown fish when there's a frown fish that needs cheering up? In The Octonauts and the Frown Fish by Meomi, the underwater crew use activities such as a baking marathon to entice their new friend to smile. Another affordable piece for the adult collector of cute.”
- Art MoCo

"As promised, here’s a post about kids’ books, and specifically Meomii’s fabulous The Octonauts series...The books in question are The Only Lonely Monster, The Sea of Shade, and the new release, The Frown Fish. All hold the attention of the grownups, the teenager, and the school-age tike in the house. Seriously, everyone should run out and get these."

Product Description

Quill & Quire

The Octonauts & the Frown Fish is the third installment in a series of picture books created by the Vancouver/L.A.-based design duo Meomi, whose trendy Pokemon-meets-Brueghel-meets-Hello Kitty sensibility has made their commercial work a worldwide success. Meomi describes the Octonauts as “a team of eight adorable undersea explorers (including a brainy octopus, a big-hearted penguin and a daredevil kitten) who are always ready for new and exciting voyages.” This time out, they discover a “Frown Fish,” whose dolour, worrisomely, is starting to rub off on other sea creatures. The team tries a variety of methods to cheer up the Frown Fish.... The charm of this narrative and the considerable achievement of  Meomi’s meticulous artwork are undermined by a number of factors. The whimsical  illustrations, relying heavily on pastels and eschewing true blacks  and whites, lack depth, and fail to draw the reader’s eye around the page, resulting in a barrage of competing information. Overall, the  book’s perfect gradients and unerringly smooth lines lack any real  warmth or idiosyncrasy – which makes it hard to identify with  the undeniably cute, but generally expressionless, characters. One has to assume, also, that the authors did not try reading aloud such awkward invented terms such as “clamcapella group” or “sea horchestra.” In the end, we’re left with the sense that Meomi is more concerned with pleasing its design audience than its child readers. This is a book to be admired, not loved.

Review

“[The Octonauts & the Frown Fish] not only is filled with illustrations of cute stylized sea creatures, but the story itself is very appealing to young readers...For designers, illustrators and those in the media industry, this is a keepsake with its lovely illustration for reference and also educational purpose. Every page is filled with endearing soft sweet colors and there is not a single space that has no colors. For parents, this is suitable for young kids to get started on adventure and exciting stories, building up curiosity about science, biology and not to forget that inquisitive mind of a young reader for detective-styled storyline. You'll be surprised if you discover a little Sherlock Holmes in the making. All in all, the storyline is simply done, the illustrations are just marvelous and the characters are just adorable and innocent. Would be a good gift for this coming Christmas.” – All About Kawaii

We have a huge octonaut fan in our house-our 5 year old daughter- and this book is probably one of her favourites.
It's beautifully illustrated of course, all the meomi books are, detailed! colourful and so fun to look at. Each page is gorgeous. The story here is a fish that is frowning and the octonauts so different things trying to get the fish to smile, when it turns out that it's an upside down fish! My husband and I love that the books are all based on real sea creatures so our daughter learns from them.
I recommend this one!

Octonauts books and T.V. episodes are colourful and appealing to young children. The various animals and vegimals work as a team to protect and help the ocean creatures. They each have special jobs and talents in order to do this. The adventures are exciting but not scary. Children learn about creatures in the sea and get a sense of how to co-operate with others, while respecting and appreciating their differences.
