Review

“I am totally charmed by the illustrations and story line of this sequel...Both are by Meomi and filled with adorable Japanese style cuties that have undersea adventures. For some reason the scenes remind me of the Teletubbies and the surreal fantasy world that they live in. The Octonauts and their adventures will be easily loved by little ones but I find the illustrations are very inspiring for an adult too.” - Bella Dia

“I am always in search of children’s books that are slightly offbeat and unique. It keeps things interesting for the grownups and the kids...The illustrations in Octonauts are vibrant and detailed. They are the kind of illustrations that the kids stare at for a while, so they can find all the intricate story and character details that are not explained in the text.”
- MamaLibrarian

“An important lesson is taught about not taking important things for granted. Are we taking important things for granted in our world such as our environment? Although the book appeals to young children, it has a wry sense of humour which will also appeal to adult readers. The illustrator is not afraid to be adventurous…All in all, the book provides a feast for the eyes!... Meomi’s story will inspire discussion about issues as far ranging as underwater creatures, shadows, submarines, friendship, and traveling to different parts of the underwater world. Recommended." - CM magazine (Canadian Review of Materials)

“It's the myriad fanciful details in the intricate undersea illustrations that will attract kids, who may also have a bit of fun with the text's scientific-sounding language” – American Library Association, Booklist

“I've been a fan of Meomi for a number of years and it's not surprising that her acquired craft as an illustrator, her attention to details and the passion shown to illustrating sweetness would take the form of children books. The characters have each a compelling personality and the story is a voyage in the realm of a very fertile imagination and the plot unfolds with page after page of visual goodness…Mind you, if you're a serious illustrator, her books are a must have for study and reference.” - NetDiver

Not the best Octonauts book, this is Meomi's earlier work and just not as cohesive as the other books out there.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Children's Book Sept. 18 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Octonauts books and T.V. episodes are colourful and appealing to young children. The various animals and vegimals work as a team to protect and help the ocean creatures. They each have special jobs and talents in order to do this. The adventures are exciting but not scary. Children learn about creatures in the sea and get a sense of how to co-operate with others, while respecting and appreciating their differences.

The artwork in the book is great but if your child is a fan of the show, it is NOT the same format. No creature report etc..

4.0 out of 5 stars The Octonauts and the Sea of Shade Jan. 18 2008
By E. Stewart - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is the second Octonauts book I purchased for my 4 year old son. The story is very sweet and the pages are beautiful. I love how the story moves the book sideways and upside down. This book has an engaging set of characters and adventure.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Octonauts and Sea of Shade Feb. 8 2008
By Matthew M. Laster - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This an absolutely wonderful book that both my 4 year old son and 15 month old daughter love. My son especially loves this book and the adventure that the octonauts go on. I would highly recommend this book to any parents with young children. The illustrations are fantastic and don't limit themselves to your typical book pictures. Your child will love looking at each picture to see all the treats that are there!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not up to typical Octonauts standards Jan. 4 2014
By Ladylaw - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
I understand that this was the second book in the original series and while stylistically it is consistent with respect to the intro, art style, and story format, the subject matter was not. I speculate that the authors weren't quite sure which direction they wanted to take their stories when the wrote this entry. By and large the Octonauts stories focus on marine biology whereas this book focuses on a fantasy story line. Some might like it, I don't really care for it. Additionally, the illustrations are a little sinister in the middle third of the book and when we give our three year old the choice of books to read in the series, he NEVER chooses this one. We are big fans of Octonauts and look forward to new adventures.

2.0 out of 5 stars Looks great. Not bad. But not Octonauts May 13 2014
By Marcus S Barber II - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
My daughter loves to watch Octonauts, and I like that every episode highlights one sea creature or another. Explore, Rescue, Protect. But in the book, the Octonauts go to the Sea of Shade to talk to the Shadow King? This seems like more of an adventure for Jake and the Neverland Pirates.

The book looks great. The artwork is great, but when I read it to my daughter I feel like it is adding the mystical to the normally grounded (for talking animals) Octonauts.
