From Amazon.com

The British sitcom The Office has the most devoted following this side of Monty Python, so an American remake seemed doomed. Amazingly, the remake actually finds its own enjoyable version of the original's uncanny comedy of embarrassment. Office manager Michael Scott (Steve Carell, The Daily Show, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) believes he's the beloved leader of the Scranton, Pennsylvania, branch of a paper products company--but his relentless and painfully forced efforts at comedy creep out everyone around him, including paranoid Dwight (Rainn Wilson, who had a memorable recurring role on Six Feet Under), nervous receptionist Pam (Jenna Fischer, LolliLove), and aimless salesman Jim (John Krasinski, A New Wave), who's smitten with the already engaged Pam. The pilot episode suffers from closely replicating the British pilot, but after that The Office finds its own footing, turning diversity training, an office birthday party, and a basketball game into excruciating yet hypnotically funny rituals of humiliation. Carell, though clearly talented, can't match Ricky Gervais' unique performance as the aggressively needy British manager (it's hard to imagine that anyone could); as a result, the supporting roles become more prominent, and Wilson, Fischer, and Krasinski quickly create a rapport that matches and may even exceed that of their British counterparts. Be sure to watch the deleted scenes; remarkably, they're as good as the material that made it on the air in this six-episode season. --Bret Fetzer

Description

In this hilarious and faster-paced adaptation of the popular British comedy series, Steve Carell is Michael Scott, the egotistical, insensitive and almost supernaturally incompetent regional manager of the Dunder Miffin paper supply company. Michael sees himself as the office funnyman, a fountain of business wisdom and his employees' cool friend. He has no clue that his staff merely tolerates his inappropriate behavior because he signs their paychecks. Michael acts as the obnoxious tour guide for an omni-present documentary crew who unflinchingly capture his many shortcomings along with Dunder Miffin's petty workplace politics, simmering romances and side-splittingly awkward moments.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Series In Its Own Right, Jan 21 2006
By A Customer
This review is from: The Office: Season One (US/NBC Version) (DVD)
I loved the British version of The Office, and I thought this one was going to stink, as American remakes of British shows generally tend to do. I'm glad I tuned in anyway, because I was so, so wrong. Not to take anything away from the absolute genius of the original, but if anything I enjoy this one more, probably because the American cultural milieu is slightly more familiar to me as a Canadian. It just feels a little closer to home. And of course a big part of the brilliance of The Office is how true to life it is - how close to home it hits. I think the real triumph of this version is the interaction of Jim and Pam (the American Tim and Dawn), which could not be more perfect. This show is still definitely recognizable as The Office, but it stands on its own merits rather than slavishly trying to reproduce the exact tone of the original. That's why it works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious!, Sep 13 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: The Office: Season One (US/NBC Version) (DVD)
NBC did an amazing job of adapting the british version of the show for american audiences. The series is led by comic genius Steve Carell, who puts his own unique spin on the boss character made famous by Ricky Gervais. The show holds its own in comparison with its british counterpart, and in my opinion is actually funnier. Apart from the pilot episode, the program uses its own new scripts and has created fresh episodes that are funnier than anything in the british series. The casting and performances are execeptional. The show has quickly carved its own identity separate from the series on which it was based.

5.0 out of 5 stars Forgot How Good This Used To Be, Mar 1 2011
This review is from: The Office: Season One (US/NBC Version) (DVD)
Don't get me wrong, The Office is still one of the best comedies on TV, but back in the day it was probably the single best show around. I'm amazed at how perfect these characters were right from the very first episode and I forgot how awkward and hard to watch (in a good way) this show used to be. What the first 2 seasons had that the show is missing now is the raw awkwardness of Michael Scott, and the sexual tension between Jim and Pam that really powered the show beyond other comedies. Essentially, the show was great because of the various forms of tension that spoke to us all and allowed us to laugh at ourselves when we're at our worst.
