Product Description

From Booklist

Gr. 1-4. A 1999 book of foldout maps has been reissued in flat-page format. It's a charming concept: beautifully detailed watercolor and ink maps of Neverland, Wonderland, Oz, Aladdin's kingdom, Snow White's forest, and the Giant's realm with Jack are each on a double-page spread. There's a key and a series of instructions so that young readers can follow paths and byways, look for hidden features, and find a possible surprise or two. This also teaches rudiments of map reading and direction following in a friendly way, and it's sufficiently packed with diminutive images so that it can be pored over for a long time. 5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book especially for teachers to use, July 18 1999
By
I found this book wonderful to use for teaching third grade map skills even if just used as a read aloud. Follow-up activities could easily be implemented from this book. The only thing to be warned about is that in the Peter Pan map, the Native Americans are called "Indians", but then again thats from Peter Pan. But I fell in love with the book for its content and purpose.

5.0 out of 5 stars Who loves it more-- the adult or child?, Feb 10 2006

We bought this book for my daughter when she was 4 and heavily into the world of princesses (especially Snow White) and fantasy. She had the book for months before she ventured off the Snow White page. There is so much to do and see with this book, and it can be easily adapted for multiple ages. This book is an especially good companion to reading some of these classics for the first time (Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, and others). While the older child will memorize the maps and whiz through the hidden pictures rather quickly, all kids will enjoy the creative process of studying the map and imagining what else happens. We have fun asking questions about where other scenes from these books could happen on the map and making our own maps from there.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!!, Feb 6 2005

I hope the author writes a follow up to this book because my 4 year old, my husband and I are enchanted by the concept. We have taught her how to use the legend and how to find things using the letters and numbers. There are only six maps, but there are plenty of little, wonderful details on each page. Buy this book, it's wonderful fun and a wonderful learning tool.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for those who are into searching for buried treasure, Feb 1 2005

This review is from: The Once Upon a Time Map Book (Hardcover)
My son is currently 6 and we had a blast reading this book. He loves playing pirates and he loves pretending to use a treasure map so this book was right up his alley. It requires adult interaction - which is great! Together we worked our way through this book. I'd see him still looking at all the details of each map long after I'd said goodnight. I wish there were more books of this nature that are appropriate for early elementary school-aged kids.
