Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This mega-selling twosome (Hansen's name is on every book in the Chicken Soup series and Allen wrote the bestselling real estate guide No Money Down) offers a long-winded pep talk on how just about anybody can make big money. According to the authors, "At this very instant you are standing in the middle of millions." They maintain that anyone can achieve "enlightened" wealth, a utopia where everyone has money and tithes, creating a better world for all. Hansen and Allen's approach is a mix of self-help and money talk, though a bit heavier on the former. The left-hand pages are a simplified explanation of how to amass millions, with options such as write a book, buy and sell real estate and start a company. The right-hand pages illustrate the same themes, via fictionalized dramas, e.g., newly widowed Michelle's struggle to come up with $1 million in cash to get her two children back from her in-laws. Hansen and Allen's feel-good suggestions run along the lines of "find a mentor," "use a fulcrum" and "be part of a team." Full of endless acronyms (e.g., "System: Save Your Self Time Energy Money"), catchy phrases (e.g., "A Dream + A Team + A Theme = Millionaire Streams") and animal imagery (butterflies, honeybees, owls and hares scamper among the pages), this offering echoes much of the self-help cacophony already out there. But its message is muddled: sometimes the millions are yours for the asking, and sometimes it's the system that keeps you down.

From Booklist

Hansen is the co-creator of the hugely popular Chicken Soup for the Soul series; Allen is a mega-best-selling personal finance author of titles such as Nothing Down (1990). They have combined forces to produce this step-by-step guide for becoming a millionaire in a short period of time. In an unusual format, the right-hand pages depict the fictional story of Michelle, a lowly waitress and mother of two who breaks out to pursue her dream of creating her own business and owning income-producing real estate. The left-hand pages are organized into what the authors call Millionaire Minutes--short lessons for becoming an "enlightened millionaire." Although they offer some suggestions on how to go about this, the lessons consist mostly of trite inspirational phrases and affirmations such as "you are your wealth," "clarity is power," and "I think like a millionaire." There are short sections on the power of leverage, networking, and systems thinking, and some specifics are discussed, such as 11 nothing-down techniques, but on the whole, it's a very brief overview with many suggestions and very little practical advice on how to carry them out. It's all just too easy, and the story of Michelle does little to improve the situation as it is quite tedious and unremarkable. Nevertheless, insipid inspiration sells. Between them, the authors have sold more than 80 million books, and this one will only boost that total. David Siegfried

3.0 out of 5 stars Good inspiration, but watch out for the web "extras.", Feb 21 2004

As many people have pointed out in their reviews, this book doesn't tell you HOW to make a million dollars, per se. However, I think if this is what you are looking for, you should instead look at a book on basic personal finances, such as Suze Ormans book which are quite readable.

However, this book does have it's strengths. The strongest of these strengths is what some reviewers have negatively termed the "feel good" aspects of the book. I believe, that beyond a knowledge of basic financial issues, you attitude IS the most important thing in achieving success in ANY project. If you goal is actually to make a million dollars, you have to believe it possible, and believe in yourself. In many ways, fictional stories are the best at this. If this doesn't work for you, there are many stories about how so-and-so made their fortune, or found success. You'll find that the common theme in such stories is that THEY ALL DID IT A DIFFERENT WAY! There isn't a formula, other than believing in what you are doing and working the steps in your personal goal. In the area of inspiration, and the idea of multiple streams of income, this book is quite good.

My MAJOR dissappointment in this book, and reason for the average rating, is due to the fact that if you sign up for the email tips, and web site extras, you basically have sold your name for junk e-mail. I know this to be true since I use a different mail address for anything like this I sign up for. Immediately on signing up for their web extras I was swamped in junk e-mail. That's so dissappointing.

2.0 out of 5 stars Far Short of the Mark, Mar 27 2004

I'm not even sure of how to write a review of this work. My usual methodology for reading anything dealing with motivation or money is to pull out a couple of highlighters, take notes and mark the points of substance when I go back and reread it for a refresher. However, my highlighters stayed capped and the notebook was used for something else.

The problem is that there's really nothing here that's not covered in other places in greater detail. I realize that the concept is to change the mindset of people so that they too realize that real wealth isn't unattainable and I applaud this. However, the novel portion is honestly quite sappy and unbelievable. Why not just use some life stories of immigrants who stepped off the plane and became wildly successful here?

I don't recall anything of substance from the non-novel portion, either. Assemble a team? Common sense. Make connections? Ditto. Figure out where your money-making talent lies? Also a good idea before you start trying to do anything. Honestly, Robert Kiyosaki's semi-discredited and semi-fictional books really contain more useful principles than this.

Ultimately, a book like this is weighed on how useful the information is in regards to achieving the goals of the person reading it. In my subjective opinion, I give the work a one star based on that criteria. The only reason I give it two stars is that I think more people need a counter to the Marxist message that making money and being rich is evil. If you really want to reorient your mindset, spend your money elsewhere, like on Brian Tracy's excellent writings.
