Product Description

Director Francis Coppola's adaptation of the popular S.E. Hinton novel about the price of rebellious youth is notable chiefly for the stunning cast of young actors who went on to rich and varied careers. In supporting roles, the film features the likes of Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze, Diane Lane, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, and Tom Waits, among others. The story centers on two rival gangs in the early 1960s Midwest, and the violent turf wars that escalate and tragically claim young lives. C. Thomas Howell plays the central character who yearns to prove himself and be accepted by his older brothers' gang, while at the same time finding his first love and dreaming of a life beyond his dead end existence. Geared toward the teenage crowd, the film nonetheless features some fine direction from Coppola in a story that evokes memories of the classic coming-of-age films of the 1950s. --Robert Lane

5.0 out of 5 stars The Outsiders Feb. 24 2006
By Adri
We have just finished both reading and watching the Outsiders movie in class. I thought the movie was an excellent adaptation of the book. I know it cut out a lot, but the thing is that there are a lot of deleted scenes in the movie, that they originally filmed. I haven't bought the dvd yet, but i have been looking into it, and it's definitly worth the buy. When i read the book i fell in love with it, and then i watched the movie and now i love it even more. It's a fantastic story that i think everyone deserves to see. The actors capture it very well, i thought they did an excellent job.Usually, I prefer the book a whole lot more then the movie, but this time, i think i like the movie better. It gives you a better view of everything going on, even though you don't get the narroration like in the book, or as much detail.Though, just seeing these actors act it all out, it's amazing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie June 8 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
In this version of The Outsiders, it shows many scenes that were cut out of the original movie. These scenes keep the movie more true to the book, and help explain more about the struggles of the Curtis brothers. It brings the movie to a more conclusive ending, including what happened in court and why Ponyboy wrote the story. The new score of this movie makes it very fun, and i liked it. Many special features are included in both disks. I especially liked watching the movie with commentary from the actors themselves. I encourage anyone who has read the book to buy this movie because it stays very true to the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Special Edition Sucks! Sept. 16 2007
This is one of the greatest films ever made, but the new version spoils it by replacing the moving original score with a pounding rock soundtrack that renders the film void of emotion and poignancy -- you no longer care about the characters. If you loved the original, avoid this version at all costs!

Man, was I happy when I watched this flick again 20 years after seeing it the theatre and wondering what the H.-E.-double-hockey-sticks happened to much of the novel's content when it came to Coppola's film adaptation.
Well, for anyone else who wondered the same thing, or who felt as did I, that the soundtrack was rather wishy-washy and didn't capture the actual early 50's feeling and time setting of the story, this new release is absolutely fantastic!
With a bow to Francis Ford Coppala's pops, Carmine, the man who scored the theatrical release of the movie with its intensity, its melodrama and it offering the film that almost "Rebel Without A Cause" feel, I prefer what Coppala has done for the new DVD release.
The new music has everything from Elvis to (I think, though I could be wrong) Link Wray on it, and it sets the mood and the period of the story much more appropriately than the original release's score.
With 22 minutes of the movie returned to its proper place, the story unfolds in a much more natural way, allowing characters and their relationships to develop in a less contrived, more organic manner.
The 2 DVD set includes all kinds of wee treats, like the video clips shot during rehearsal time (video was new & revolutionary for filmmakers at the time, and Coppola shot the whole picture on video prior to shooting on film), a fun 20 year reunion of many of the cast members commenting on the film, joking with each other, and reminiscing about how young and inexperienced they all were back then. We even get to see the original readings & auditions for the movie's parts, which have some interesting surprise stars who initially read for the film.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greatest movie in America! May 5 2004
By A Customer
This movie is a fabulous movie! So thrilling and so exciting! You read the book and it is great and when you watch the movie it is greater than the book! Dally, Ponyboy, Darry, Johnny, Two-Bit, and Soda-pop all have their own personalities. Some start off like tow-headed jerks and at the end turn to someone who actually did love something and lost it and is killed. Some start out sweet and then they turn around out off no where and kill someone! It is amazing how the theme and characters seem to catch your attention when you watch the movie. If you read the book it doesn't exactly bring out what the movie does. It gives you major points but the movie gives chiils on top of thrills! The chills are not bad though. They are the good chills that prove you are really getting in to the movie! The thrills are at the parts where something totally unexpected happens and you have no idea what so ever what to think about the situation! I do believe that if you watch this movie it will change your outlokk on life!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Outsiders April 5 2004
Format:VHS Tape
When I was in high school, I had the pleasure of reading a fantastic novel named, "The Outsiders." The author, Susan Eloise Hinton, only 15 years old, wrote her rendition of the conflicts between high society and the lower class citizen. Her novel was so well written that you couldn't stop reading it. Recently, I discovered the movie version of the novel and just had to view it. Francis Ford Coppola, who's known for directing the films, "Apocalypse Now" and the first two "Godfather's" directed the film version of, "The Outsiders." Although no awards were won for the movie, the cast was full of the top stars that we see today, which includes, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Ralph Macchio, Patrick Swayze, Rob Lowe, Emilio Estves, Tom Cruise and Diane Lane. With a cast this good how could you go wrong?
The story takes place in the early 1960's in Tulsa, Oklahoma where we see the classic rivalry between the rich, whom are call, "socs" (short for socials) and lower class citizen who were called "greasers" building tension toward each other until the final climax of the big rumble. The main themes of the story, are the struggles between two conflicting groups trying to bridge the gap between rich and poorer, honor among the lawless and treacherousness of male-female interaction through the narration of the main character "Ponyboy".
Although I felt the movie was incredible I believe the music soundtrack needed a little help. This action pact drama is rated PG for violence but, I believe that any age group, accompanied by an adult, would love to see and understand how society sometime manipulates individual outcomes. When you get right down to it, the movie, with its great story line and cast, causes you to laugh, cry and get wrapped up in all the conflicting moments. Any movie that can take you from the couch and place you and the middle of the drama deserves a high rating. That's why I recommend this movie to anyone and give it *****5 stars.
