Book Description

May 1 2009

Papercutting is an ancient, elegant art that dates almost as far back as the creation of paper itself. In today’s multicultural world, papercutting embraces any number of themes, designs, and images. It is an all-inclusive art that requires few tools and minimal materials. All one needs is instruction and inspiration, both of which are found in good measure in The Art of Papercutting. The book includes more than 20 projects that feature a range of sizes, subject matters, and techniques. Every project features step-by-step photographs and numerous helpful hints.

Product Description

Melichson, Henya. The Art of Paper Cutting. Quarry: Quayside. 2009. c.128p. illus. ISBN 978-1-59253-525-5. pap. $19.99. CRAFTS
Decorative paper cutting using a single sheet of paper produces lacy silhouettes. Melichson's very elaborate designs draw on religious and ethnic motifs from Mediterranean countries and take some practice to draw out and execute. Templates that may be photocopied and traced are provided for less-intricate projects. - Library Journal, Oct 15, 2009

4.0 out of 5 stars Henya Scissorhands May 23 2009
By S. Fishburn - Published on
Henya Melichson is a member of an elite cadre of current artists who excel at the intricate and exacting, yet bold art of paper cutting. Beginning her career traditionally as a painter, she has been creating detailed papercuts for over 20 years. From elaborate semi-historical scenes to more contemporary holiday theme designs, she displays amazing skill and flair. The Art of Paper Cutting includes a varied selection of her work (love the "Indian Elephant" and "Woman in Leaf"!), along with a lovely overview of papercutting around the world, a technique tutorial, and a lesson in composition for papercutters. There are three dozen projects with step by step instructions, though those projects do NOT include templates. Because of the extreme detail of some of them, beginning paper cut artists will probably find them inspiring more than replicable. There are 13 actual templates included from which bookmarks, bookplates, and more can be designed and constructed.

4.0 out of 5 stars ooops Oct. 6 2012
By Suzan Wachs Katzir - Published on
As an introduction to papercutting, this little book is very nice, particularly for the price. Melichson's art is quite lovely and the simple patterns in the back achievable for beginners. The "ooops" comes in with the captions on several of her Jewish-themed pieces. That "elaborate lamp" on page 39 is actually a Torah ornament. The "coat of many colors" on page 81 was worn by Joseph, not Jacob. There are other errors of this sort. Clearly Melichson is a secular Israeli. Where was her editor?

I had high hopes for this book based on the reviews and page previews but was a bit underwhelmed by the content. The authors cuttings are beautiful but I was hoping it would include more instruction/patterns.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hanksap April 30 2009

I purchased this book as a gift to my girlfriend. She loved it. She used the template from the back to create a beautiful heart shaped floral arrangement. It was the first time that she used paper cutting technique. I would highly recommend this book as a gift for any art and crafts minded person.
