Book Description

Combining expert training techniques with helpful advice and information, a comprehensive guide to puppy and dog care explains how to control a young pet without hurting its spirit, with tips on setting routines, preventing bad habits, grooming, health care, and the training process.

From the Back Cover

Here is the perfect book for puppy owners and would-be puppy owners who want to know how to bring their puppy up to be a happy, well-behaved, friendly adult dog. Antisocial behavior in dogs is often (rightly) blamed on owners. But most dog owners are neither irresponsible or uncaring. They simply don't have the knowledge they need to raise and train a dog properly. This book provides that knowledge.

The Perfect Puppy gives you the latest behavioral information and emphasizes prevention rather than cure. Follow Gwen Bailey's easy-to-understand advice and you should have no trouble with such problems as chewing shoes, pulling on the lead, or aggression when your dog is fully grown.

Full-color photographs show you how to housebreak your puppy and how to teach it to obey and generally be a good canine citizen.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book.... Just Not For Us and Our Canine Companion, Jun 22 2004
This review is from: The Perfect Puppy (Hardcover)
We bought this book when we adopted a puppy. The ideas were very well-thought out and well-written, easy to understand. I read this book over and over and wondered why my puppy was still behaving like a maniac, very few of the techniques worked. I began to question myself, thinking I could not understand the simple techniques written about in this book.

We hired a trainer. When he came to the house he saw "The Perfect Puppy" sitting on our coffee table, and mentioned that he thought it was a great book....... just not for us!!! He explained that the book was written about more submissive breeds (ie Golden Retreiver), we adopted a puppy made up of 2 very dominant breeds. At least I figured out that I wasn't crazy after all!

I'll keep the book around and definitely pass it on to anyone I know who will be getting a puppy. I'm very disappointed that it didn't work, because as I said, it was well-written and easy to understand. I hope it benefits someone else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Too Generic!, Jun 2 2004

This book is waaay too generic. It assumes pretty much everything and does not go into detail about anything! Also, I find it to be written more for the super-busy family rather than a person who wants to be with their dog 24-7. It does have some good points, and will most definitely benefit a person who doesn't know zilch about dogs. But if you've ever had a dog, you'd probably know most of what's in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Perfect Puppy: By Gwen Bailey, Feb 13 2004

This review is from: The Perfect Puppy (Hardcover)
I was feeling like I was the only person who believed it was better to train a young puppy rather than try to retrain an older puppy. This book had some ideas I have used and some new helpful ones. I really recommend this book to anyone getting a new puppy. I think it was short enough, easy to follow, and to the point to help even a child learn how to have a perfect puppy. If everyone getting a puppy would read books like this we may not need Humane Societies.
