This came bundled with the 3D TV I bought and is not one I would have been likely to buy but as a rail fan with long ties to trains and railroading I was glad to have a look at it. The scenes on board the train, with the depth of 3D, brought back a lot of memories of childhood train travel in their realism. There were also lots of scenes that had not even the remotest connection with reality but, hey, they represented the dream of a little boy on Christmas Eve so not known to be governed by a lot of discipline in the reality department. On the other hand, in one scene I noticed that just visible on the sleeve of the conductor were 5 service bars, little strips of bright metal that each represent probably, as on the Canadian Pacific Railway, 5 years of service. That's not the level of detail you'd expect in a film of this type!

I read somewhere that the steam engine in the film was based on one that had actually existed and probably still does as I believe it was used in the computer-based generation of its image. I can't swear to that but it looked realistic enough to me, who as a 16-year old once spent a few hot hours shoveling coal into the firebox of one. And in spite of my interest in the railroading aspects of the film I found the scenes of the nighttime snow falling on a quiet residential street of the forties or fifties to really have benefited even more from the advantages of 3D. Crowd scenes in 3D are also always interesting too even if they are crowds of elves. Or maybe especially if they are crowds of elves. There was a lot of artistic genius evident in the depiction of the city at the north pole too. That's right, a city. Who knew?

Excellent movie. 3D is also excellent working fabulously on our new 3D LG tv. A timeless classic that should be watched by all.

l'effet 3D de se film est sublime et change même notre façon de voir le film, aucunement superflu et de grande qualité

PLEASE NOTE: The rating is for the overall presentation from the 3D effects to the movie itself.

Before purchasing this movie on Blu-Ray 3D, I did some research and notice a lot of complaints on the presentation of the 3D version. Numerous people reported a ghosting/crosstalk effect during the movie while viewing on their 3D HDTVs or projectors. Mind you, most of these reviews were dated back in 2010 when the movie was re-released on this format. For those that are curious, crosstalk/ghosting is when an image is doubled, giving off this motion blur-like effect. I highly suggest reading this article as a starter for more details and the difference between ghosting & crosstalk: [...]
I made a gamble and purchased the movie despite the universal complaints of the 3D quality. I'm happy to report that I didn't experience any type of ghosting or crosstalk during the 3D presentation. The movie was just as good as viewing at the theatres. For the record, I was using the Playstation 3 (launch/fat model) console on Sony KDL-50R550A LED HDTV to watch this movie. The TV itself is passive 3D (glasses are like the ones given out at the theatres) with some of the settings (i.e. contrast, brightness, etc...) tweaked for optimal viewing in my entertainment room.

Of course, the movie is still great. The CGI is remarkable even to this day, especially the hot chocolate scene. I might be bias as I've been loving every Robert Zemeckis' animated feature with The Polar Express and A Christmas Carol being my top favourites. Both movies are a must-watch during the holiday season.

I will have to return this dvd since it is not in 3D. It must have been a mistake. I already have this wonderful dvd but not in 3D.

If you are a lover of this movie and the initial story/book by Chris Van Aslberg, you should purchased this Blue-ray! We purchased a new LED TV that didn't have 3D access (I wish that I had read the fine print) so we were able to watch this film in 2D as well. The Blue-ray was the hit for our Christmas family entertainment for 2013. The quality of the film enhanced by the blue-ray technology, especially the "train scenes" and the roller-coaster effects" are my favourite. This film keeps the "child within me" re-concurring, year after the year...I will always be able to "hear Santa's bell" ringing, just for me! Can't wait for one of my friends to invite us over to watch this film in 3D Blue-ray, wearing 3D glasses, I'm sure this film will really come alive for me!
