Portrait of a Young Lady Affronting Her Destiny... May 27 2012
By D. S. Thurlow - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Henry James' 1881 classic novel "The Portrait of a Lady" features his magnificent literary skills in the story of "a certain young lady affronting her destiny." The certain young lady is Isabella Archer, an orphaned but independent American woman, taken to Britain by her Anglicized aunt. Isabella is spirited, intelligent, and attractive, and she will be wooed by several men.

The story takes place in a series of venues in the US, Britain, and Italy, all closely described, and in a procession of set-piece encounters with subtle and delicious dialogue, and subtler plot twists. There is a distinct air through the book that Isabella is walking into a trap, one that will become increasingly obvious to her as the story progresses, and one that will require her to choose among her allegiances at the end.

"The Portrait of a Lady" is a long and challenging read at nearly 600 pages, and maybe the reader has to like Henry James a lot to enjoy the slowly unfolding story and the difficult, ambiguous ending. It is highly recommended to those with the interest and the fortitude to take on the task.
