Book Description

Millions of Westerners have been enlightened by Buddhism's message of peace and tolerance. These teachings are now available in a lucid conversation with Buddhism's most respected teacher in which the Dalai Lama discusses modern issues--racial hatred, abortion, the strife in Bosnia--and how they can be understood and reconciled with a positive view of humanity.

About the Author

His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama Tenzin Gyatso, is the head of state and spiritual leader of the Tibetan people. He was born Lhamo Dhondrub on 6 July 1935, in a small village called Taktser in northeastern Tibet. Born to a peasant family, His Holiness was recognized at the age of two, in accordance with Tibetan tradition, as the reincarnation of his predecessor the 13th Dalai Lama, and thus an incarnation Avalokitesvara, the Buddha of Compassion.

He began his education at the age of six and completed the Geshe Lharampa Degree (Doctorate of Buddhist Philosophy) when he was 25 in 1959. He assumed political power and due to his continued efforts to bring about world peace, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989 and won worldwide praise for his devotion to a non-violent liberation of Tibet.

His Holiness follows the life of Buddhist monk, in his small cottage in Dharamsala, India. He rises at 4am to meditate, before attending administrative meetings, private audiences and religious teachings and ceremonies. He has written many books on Buddhism, including Transforming the Mind, The Four Noble Truths, The Art of Happiness and A Simple Path.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, Aug 24 2000
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
I loved this book. I didn't know what compassion was until I read this book. It is true that there is a definition in the dictionary, but unless you can get some data around it, it is meaningless. If you are curious about compassion, the Dalai Lama or Buddhism, it is a must read - even though it is hard to find!

4.0 out of 5 stars I listened to the AUDIO book, Jun 11 2004
By Kelley Hunt - Published on Amazon.com
The audio version is abridged so you don't get to hear everything that is in the book version. It is read by Sir Derek Jacobi, although he has not been given credit in the bibliographic information here! Sir Derek Jacobi has a wonderfully soothing and expressive voice, allowing him to deliver the Dalai Lama's messages with the sensitivity I'm sure they deserve.
This audio contains messages on a great many topics other than compassion, but perhaps all the issues are meant to relate back to the main topic. Some of the essays address issues of Buddhist philosophy which were pretty much over my head since I am not a Buddhist, but a Southern Baptist. Some of the main points I got from the essays were: be tolerant of other people's religions, sex without commitment and responsibility is "awful", people should use birth control since the world can only support a finite number of humans, all nations should disarm themselves to prevent war, in order to foster compassion we should think of every human being as having an equal right to happiness, that we should think positive thoughts and smile to have a good influence on others. Even if you are not Buddhist I think this is worth listening to as it will broaden your horizons and might give you some new ideas. I gave this item 4 stars because it was abridged which takes away from the full impact of the work.
