Book Description

Jun 14 2007
This exciting new Canadian text covers the fundamentals of critical thinking, reasoning, argumentation, logic, and argumentative essay-writing. It also includes comprehensive coverage of inference to the best explanation, extensive discussion of scientific reasoning, and provides a thorough discussion of credibility and the evaluation of evidence, as well as of the psychological and social factors that can impede critical thinking. This new edition incorporates numerous references to Canadian persons, places, political events, and debates over issues that matter to Canadians, allowing students to place important concepts in a familiar context while at the same time maintaining the lively, informal tone that have made the original text so popular.

Review

"I was unhappy with a lot of the critical thinking texts out there, and after some careful shopping I chose Vaughn and MacDonald's The Power of Critical Thinking. My students were almost universal in their appreciation for the text's layout, appearance, and understandable treatment of complex concepts. I found that students had a better knowledge of the major concepts, and they scored exceptionally well on the mid-term examination. The mid-term average went up by 14 per cent over past years using another text/test combo. My students learned the staple concepts of critical thinking and actually said they enjoyed it! In my experience, critical thinking courses can be intimidating, sometimes even profoundly negative experiences for students. I strongly recommend The Power of Critical Thinking as an effective tool for guiding students through this terrain." -- Ken Kirkwood, University of Western Ontario

4.0 out of 5 stars Informative Sep 8 2009

This book is informative and helped me understand how to rationally evaluate truth claims. I am using it for a course at a Christian university and despite it being written by someone not of my faith, I appreciated it for its intellectual value. This book would be great for any who are on debate teams or "argue" frequently about a mulitude of topics, as it teaches proper technique and helps to find holes in logic of opposing viewpoints.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book, long wait Oct 1 2010

This is a great book for my logic class. I'm 23, and I find it doesn't dumb down language or concepts for "younger" readers. Unfortunately, whomever I ordered this book from waited until the last possible minute to mail the book to me, so I was in class without a book for almost 4 weeks! But if your teacher requires this book, definitely buy it. It will probably be able to explain the concepts better than your professor can!
3.0 out of 5 stars Longwinded, But Funny May 17 2013

I thought this text brought up some good points, but that the chapters were unnecessarily long. A lot of the concepts in here are things most people already know. All the in-chapter examples really aren't necessary. I do think Vaughn writes in a way that's easy for everyone to understand though, and the little touches of humor are a good way to keep the subject interesting.
