5.0 out of 5 stars Best of the positive thinking books April 23 2004
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Dr. Norman Vincent Peale is the father of the positive thinking book era. This book provides strategies to employ positive thinking. Positive thinking is a tool we can all use to improve our lives. It helps us persist through obstacles and roadblocks, set goals and achieve them. Recently I read Optimal Thinking: How To Be Your Best Self which explained the pros and cons of positive and negative thinking (positive thinking has some shortcomings we need to be aware of), how to make the most of (optimize) emotions and every situation. I recommend both of these books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Christian 'Think & Grow Rich' Oct. 11 2003
Format:Paperback
In the words of the author, this book teaches positive thinking "not as a means to fame, riches or power, but...to overcome defeat and accomplish worthwhile creative values in life."
Where Napoleon Hill's Think & Grow Rich encourages the reader to get in touch with a generic 'Infinite Intelligence', The Power of Positive Thinking is openly and unapologetically Christian. If you aren't open to evangelical Christianity, this book is not for you. If you are open, this book will help set you free.
Based primarily on Biblical affirmation statements, prayer and a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, it will help you to choose the right attitude, energize yourself, increase your expectations (and reach them), avoid worry and defeat, and focus on the truly important things in life.
Humble and not at all preachy, Norman Vincent Peale openly shares his own struggles with negative thinking, and tells how others have helped him overcome it. He rightly lets us know that positive thinking does not guarantee our success, but it does bring it much closer to the realm of possibility.
The language is somewhat dated, but the principles are timeless. As Peale says, "The way of life to which this book is a witness is very wonderful. It is not easy. Indeed, it often is hard, but it is full of joy and hope and victory." If you are ready to experience joy, hope and victory, this is the place to start.

5.0 out of 5 stars Start Again WITH THIS BOOK! Dec 14 2002
Format:Audio Cassette
There is no book quite like the Power of Positive Thinking by the late Norman Vincent Peale. This philosophy, that has instructed millions and roused controversy amongst staunch fundamentalists, is genius in it's approach to the power God can supply each of us with. This isn't a get-spriritual-quick program. But a real discipline if employed fervently. Peale takes some incredible scripture verses and makes them cornerstones in this Bible study meets personal wellness seminar. Peale was smart in that he saw that people weren't naturally spiritual, and thus needed practice. The psychology of this is actually centered around Jesus Christ and is not some new age program designed to exalt self above God. Rather, "Power" gets its force from Jesus and not our own abilities. What amazes me is the reluctance of certain Christian teachers in embracing these disciplines as a way to receive Christ and grow as a Christian. Peale does not describe it as a born-again experience, but rather a spiritual awakening of sorts. This language invites everyone, and this was all prior to the born-again designation which the media often uses as a pejorative. However, it's not neccessarily applicable to faith in other gods as one reviewer said. Jesus Christ is the undeniable center of what Peale taught. It was revolutionary, and still is-to think by using the Bible as a tool, we can be positive thinkers, better humans and grow closer to God. The Power of Positive Thinking only affirms what the Bible teaches-and makes it highly accessible for anyone seeking.

1.0 out of 5 stars Peale's book: Dated and trite Feb. 11 2001
Format:Paperback
The reason this book fails has little to do with the subject matter. Sure the discussion of prayer and God ad nauseum tires quickly with the non-pious, but the real problem lies in the repetitious nature of this glib little self-help manual. There is little to be gained from reading the entire book as opposed to the first (or any) 10 pages. In fact, I can save you money by telling you all of Peale's life-improving tips right here: Pray more and put your faith in God-- happiness and confidence to ensue. Further, self-congratulation oozes out of nearly every passage. Peale has clearly enjoyed a long, successful career, but his narcissism, the way he praises the profound effects he has had on others, and generally hypes himself up are sickening. I'm sure nobody complained in 1952, but this book is about as misogynistic a text as I have ever come across. What's more it is loaded with phony science. Passages like, "We [humans] have thousands of little sending stations, and when they are tuned up by prayer it is possible for a tremendous power to flow through a person and to pass between human beings. We can send off power by prayer which acts as both a sending and receiving station." I'm not sure Peale's "sending station" theory holds much weight in today's scientific community; but then, maybe that is not the point. If Positive Thinking is not a verifiable scientifically accurate text, it does read as interesting sociological text from a now closed era in American history. If this book has changed your life, congratulations. For most, however, this book is a relic, and a dull one at that. For you agnostics, read a non-denominational self-help book; for Christians, read the Bible.
