Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

This contemporary tale of a woman wronged fails to chart new territory, but engages with its attractive, sympathetic heroine. Up-and-coming black Texas state representative Walter Carlson has a history of philandering, but when he dumps the baby he recently fathered with his latest mistress on his long-suffering (and infertile) wife, Vivian, it is the last straw. Livid, Vivian is forced into keeping the infant when her husband holds a press conference and announces that they have adopted a homeless baby. Soon, however, Vivian succumbs to her maternal needs and falls in love with the infant, whom she names Passion. She determines to leave Walter, taking Passion with her, and begins a struggle to maintain her law-student schedule, spend time with her baby and find adequate child care. Rescue comes in the form of Marc Kline, a divorced father and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer who teaches at the local university and is working on a book about adoption. A subplot about Passion's birth mother adds suspense, as well as a touch of originality, to the otherwise pedestrian romance. Walter, who belatedly comprehends the value of a good woman and wants Vivian back in his life, gets a satisfying, if heavy-handed, comeuppance. (Oct.)

5.0 out of 5 stars one of the best books I have read in several years, Jan 20 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Price of Passion (Paperback)
Being in two book clubs, I do a lot of reading. If a book does not grab me in the beginning, I tend to put it down. This book got me from the page one and didn't let go until the last page.

I have passed this book to at least three friends, who also have loved it.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I put myself in her place so many times and don't quite know if I could have handled the situation as great as she did. She was awesome. I loved all of the characters and I loved that they all got what they deserved in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Price of Passion -- What is it worth?, Jan 1 2003

This review is from: The Price of Passion (Paperback)
Ms. Palfrey has written a wonderful, suspenseful book. The Price of Passion is the story of Vivian Carlson, who has been in a loveless marriage for approximately 20 years. Walter Carlson, is Vivian's unfaithful, politically hungry husband. Vivian's husband gives Vivian a package, another's woman's baby, who has eyes just like Walter's. The baby worms her way into Vivian's life and into her heart.

Everyone knows that Vivian is too good for Walter. Vivian's mother and sister; Walter's cousin, Sherman; Walter's best friend, Bobby Africa; Vivian's friends, Cora and Marc - all are aware. However, what would Vivian do for "The Price of Passion?" Would Vivian surrender the love of the babe, she so desparately wants to keep? Would she give up the friendship of Marc Kline, the journalist and professor? Would she give up fulfilling her dreams of becoming a lawyer, a career she postponed years ago to help Walter further his career? Would Vivian give up her opportunity to be a mother? Would you? What is worth "The Price of Passion?"

Again, Ms. Palfrey has written a wonderful book. I kept turning the pages to uncover the truth and discover just what Vivian would do. The book has some surprising events. It is definitely a page turner.
