Product Description

Album Description

"Darkness was my 'samurai' record," Springsteen writes, "stripped to the frame and ready to rumble. But the music that got left behind was substantial." For the first time, fans will have access to two discs containing a total of 21 previously-unreleased songs from the Darkness recording sessions, songs that, as Springsteen writes, "perhaps could have/should have been released after Born To Run and before the collection of songs that Darkness on the Edge of Town became."

Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of "Racing in the Street," the never-before-released original recordings of "Because the Night," "Fire," and "Rendezvous," the supreme pop opus "Someday (We'll Be Together)," the hilarious "Ain't Good Enough for You," the superb soul-based vocal performance on "The Broken Hearted," the utterly haunting "Breakaway," and the now finally released, fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song, "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator, Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. 'The Promise' is simply a great listening experience."

Lyrics to all of the songs, a new essay from Bruce Springsteen and never-before-seen photographs from the Darkness sessions are also included.

Album Description

2010 two CD release, a collection of unreleased tracks recorded during the sessions for Springsteen's classic 1978 album Darkness On The Edge Of Town. On this release, Springsteen's dark lyricism is in full flow; these songs sound like a fully realized album, and not just a collection of outtakes. Highlights include the extraordinary rock version of 'Racing in the Street,' the never-before-released original recordings of 'Because the Night,' 'Fire,' and 'Rendezvous,' the supreme pop opus 'Someday (We'll Be Together),' the hilarious 'Ain't Good Enough for You,' the superb soul-based vocal performance on 'The Brokenhearted,' the utterly haunting 'Breakaway,' and the fully orchestrated masterpiece and title song "The Promise." All 21 songs have been mixed by Springsteen's long-time collaborator Bob Clearmountain. According to long-time manager/producer Jon Landau, "There isn't a weak card in this deck. 'The Promise' is simply a great listening experience."

4.0 out of 5 stars 'The Promise' - not broken, Dec 27 2010

This is a great re-mix project. But, I would have also liked the pleasure of hearing the original mixes of these songs as they were put in the 'can' in 1976,77 without the modern embellishments. Just sayin'. It could have been another disc(s) 'naked'. Highly recommended though. I am going to purchase the deluxe package.

Seems Bruce likes to clean out the closet well. A collection of unreleased tracks [and variations] recorded around the Darkness on the Edge of Town recording sessions. A good chunk of these never even appeared on the various bootlegs that were released over the years but of course they were not as "clean" as this collection.

If not this collection, then there is the Darkness on the Edge of Town box sets featuring a remastered Darkness albums plus 3 DVDs or Blu-Ray discs and other stuff.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great CDs - that's why he's the 'Boss', Sep 6 2011

I watched the Documentary before listening to these CDs, and I'm speechless. According to some of the today's 'musician''s standards, there should have been at least 5 more release, or 'none'-'cos they're never up to this level. Bruce said in the interview that he can't quit from the music scene even during the legal battle with his ex-manager between the 'BTR' and 'Darkness' albums, since he has no other 'skill'-thanks to the Lord that he has no other 'alternative', otherwise, there's a very big hole in the Rock and Roll History. Listen to 'Racing in the Street', 'Because the Night', 'Fire', 'The Promise', and so on ......., I would request Bruce to look deeper into his vault, and release more left-over from it, to balance the today's so called 'music scene'.
