Punisher ~ Punisher

The impressively muscular chest of Tom Jane is the focal point of The Punisher, a movie based on a Marvel Comics superhero. Frank Castle (Jane, Deep Blue Sea) retires from the FBI, which means--as any moviegoer expects--that his family is toast. Howard Saint (John Travolta, Face/Off), a shady Florida businessman whose son was killed in Castle's last mission, orders a hit not only on Castle's wife and child, but also on his parents and a whole bunch of aunts, uncles, cousins, and so forth. The killers shoot Castle himself in the chest, but he inexplicably survives and--as any moviegoer expects--sets out to even the score. Implausibly, given his sometimes curious and roundabout methods, he succeeds. Also featuring Will Patton (Armageddon) as an oily thug, Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) as Saint's fleshpot wife, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-Men) as a waitress with bad taste in men. --Bret Fetzer

I have no idea what everyone on here is talking about. I have seen this @ the movies and have bought the DVD. Since have watched it many a times with friends and family. It is exactly what the punisher is supposed to be, it has well done. Don't watch this movie if you wanna see a bit of fighting and romance, like spiderman or something like that. It has its graphic scenes and thats what The Punisher has been about from day one.

I'll be the first to admit this was not the movie I was expecting to see. After all, any movie called The Punisher, well, one would expect to see PUNISHMENT. And while they do dish out a certain amount of revenge (sorry..."justice") it's not really what the movie is about. In my opinion, Frank Castle isn't even really "The Punisher" until the last few minutes of the movie (though the action is spread throughout).
Think of this movie as more of a prequel than an actual "PUNISHER" film...the story that tells why and how Frank changed from a loving husband/father into a barely human Terminator.
It's not the film I thought I was getting...but it was the right way to do the story, and a solid film to boot. If you liked X-Men, you should like this. And just like X-Men, the sequels should only get better.

Having never read any of The Punisher comics books and going to see the movie on a whim, I was pleasantly surprised with the movie that I saw. I had no expectations about anything going into the movie and I had nothing to compare the film with. Being a fan of comic book movies, I felt that The Punisher was the most realistic one I've seen in a long time, because Frank Castle isn't a super-hero, he's just a regular guy and I think that's one of the things that drew me to the character and the story. I know a lot of people, mostly fans of the comics were expecting big gun fights and explosions, and were probably disappointed with how the action played out, but I welcomed that fact that The Punisher was more dramatic than action-packed, I really felt for the Frank Castle character. The movie does have its faults, every movie does, but the core of the story is Frank Castle dealing with the murder of his entire family...and it made me wonder...what would I do in a situation like that.

Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) has just completed his final mission with the FBI: posing as European arms dealer Otto Krieg to lure Bobby Saint—son of crime boss Howard Saint (John Travolta)—into a deal and eventually put him away. A shootout ensues and Bobby is killed. Frank retires and heads down to Florida on vacation with his family. When Howard Saint discovers Frank’s true identity and that “Krieg” didn’t die in the shootout, he sends a team of men to take out Frank’s family as payback for killing his son. Howard Saint’s men kill everyone including, they think, Frank. But Frank survives—barely—and soon gets well enough to punish Howard and his family slowly and painfully in an effort to balance the scales of justice.

I’m a huge fan of this movie despite there being a big divide amongst fans about it. Personally, it hit home to me on a lot of levels and this is why I love it. It’s a story of tragedy and pain, things going south in a big way, and one man trying to make things right the only way he knows how. What especially impressed me was the overall feel of the film and how that reflected Frank’s journey from family man to broken man to Punisher. In the beginning, everything is happy, cheery, colorful, and then once all are killed, suddenly the tone goes bleak, it’s all grays and browns and blacks, and everything becomes ultra serious. Even the humorous bits are done in a serious manner.

I also liked the glimpses into the lives of the others in Frank’s apartment building: Joan (Rebecca Romijn), Bumpo (John Pinette) and Spacker Dave (Ben Foster).

Be warned, I saw this in the theatre, so I have no idea what "goodies" the DVD will include, so I can only really give my opinion on the movie itself.
That being said, I thought this movie was pretty good. But, if you are expecting a comic book movie adaptation on the par with Spider-man or X-men, then you will be disappointed. Think more along the lines of Daredevil, good but not spectacular. It seemed to pick good parts from various popular comic book storylines and then "hollywood cheesed" it up a bit. If you read the comics and have seen this movie or Daredevil, you'll know exactly what I am talking about. Don't get me wrong, I went and saw this movie as a MOVIE and not as a faithful adaptation of the comic book. It was good, just not great. I was entertained, and I guess thats all I can ask for. I just had a problem with the way that Travoltas character died, and really wasn't happy with his character portrayal in general. Normally, I really like him as an actor, but this movie he just seemed... stiff, for lack of a better word. The real shining star of this movie, however, is Thomas Jayne, who did a fantastic job in the lead role of Frank Castle (aka the Punisher). I had never really heard of him before this, but he was superb.
If you have never read any of the great "Punisher" comics in your life, you will still enjoy this movie as a good action flick. But for you fanboys out there, it heavily revamps his origin and then borrows alot from Garth Ennis recent storylines from his Punisher mini series that came out a few years ago. By the way, you should pick up his new ongoing Punisher series out now, it's great, but I digress.
So all in all, it's not a bad popcorn flick.
