Product Description

Product Description

The Quality Companion provides the first dedicated look at the prolific Golden Age publisher which spawned a treasure trove of beautiful art and classic characters, including the modern-day "Freedom Fighters" - Uncle Sam, Phantom Lady, Black Condor, The Ray, Human Bomb, and Doll Man - as well as Plastic Man, the Blackhawks, and others now under the DC Comics umbrella. It provides the first-ever A-Z, in-depth character profile of every Quality costumed hero, many of whom were superbly-produced but are now long-forgotten. It also reprints, in full-color, several 1940s key stories of these characters from such rare 1940s collector's items as Smash Comics, Police Comics, National Comics, Feature Comics, and Crack Comics, and features Golden Age art by the top artistic talents of that era, including Lou Fine, Reed Crandall, Jack Cole, Chuck Cuidera, Matt Baker, Will Eisner, and others! Creators who were instrumental in the revival of the Quality characters from the 1970s to today are also interviewed, including Roy Thomas, Len Wein, and Jimmy Palmiotti.

If you're remotely a fan of comics history this is a must have. The first quarter of the book consists of full color reprints of several representative golden age stories. After the reprints the book proper goes into the complicated history of Quality, then goes on to include profiles on artists, writers, a mini encyclopedia of all the major Quality characters, and a very complete bibliography for the research involved in writing the book itself. Also included are publication histories of Quality titles both by genre and character, a plug for the Digital Comics Museum, and a well written explanation of the copyright status of these old titles.

Another nice thing is that the book doesn't stop with the golden age, and covers the 'modern' use of Quality characters once they were acquired by DC - covering the changeover of the Blackhawk title, the JLA/JSA crossover which introduced the Freedom Fighters, the use of Quality characters in Thomas's All Star Squadron, and includes discussion of the 2010 reboots of the Freedom Fighters. The book is current enough to even give a nod to the recent appearance by the Freedom Fighters on the Batman: Brave and the Bold animated series.

A very good all-in-one guide to all things Quality.

For those who think Plastic Man, Uncle Sam & the Freedom Fighters are DC products think again. This book does a wonderful job of putting their history in place from the founders to the creators involved. This companion even has some nice reprinted comics. Worth a look.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best of All the Companion Books!!, Jan 8 2012
By Robert J. Millikin "renowned know-it-all" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Quality Companion: Celebrating the Forgotten Publisher of Plastic Man (Paperback)
This is the finest of Twomorrows's Companion books to Golden Age comic. An enormous amount of research has resulted in a treasure trove for the Golden Age Comics fan. Well written, organized and edited, this book will stand for years to come. The only complaints are that the Quality western characters and the noirish detectives and operatives like Ken Shannon and T-man are given short shrift. Perceptive fans can see the firm hand of longtime comics historian and interviewer, Jim Amash at work and will welcome his first-time collaborator. This book is worth it's price just for the Blackhawk section alone. And there is so much more!
