Book Description

Dec 21 2006
Surprisingly, no book of quotations on God and religion by atheists and agnostics exists. Luckily, for the millions of American nonbelievers who have quietly stewed for years as the religious right made gains in politics and culture, the wait is over. Bestselling author Jack Huberman's zeitgeist sense has honed into the backlash building against religious fundamentalism and collected a veritable treasure trove of quotes by philosophers, scientists, poets, writers, artists, entertainers, andpolitical figures. His colorful cast of atheists includes Karen Armstrong, Lance Armstrong, Jules Feiffer, Federico Fellini, H. L. Mencken, Ian McKellen, Isaac Singer, Jonathan Swift, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Virginia Woolf and the Marquis de Sade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thoroughly engaging, edifying and entertaining! July 7 2007
Format:Paperback
I gave it 5 stars because I couldn't put it down. It reminded me of reading Bertrand Russell's "Why I am not a Christian" for the first time. Huberman's collection left me once again feeling pity both for those too afraid to face cosmic reality, as well as for those of us who have only our fellow mammals supernatural delusions to fear. Meanwhile, I was giddy with the knowledge imparted by the vast array of historical figures quoted therein. I will reread it, again and again, for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quotes quotes quotes! Sep 26 2007
Format:Paperback
Compilations of quotes I find are one of my favorite forms of literature. Atheist literature is even better. Throw those together? Well, you know where they can put their crosses.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Compiler Brings the Book Way Down Aug 1 2007
Format:Paperback
Although his selection of quotations is excellent, Jack Huberman sabotages his own book by inserting his own unfunny and simple-minded editorial comments anywhere and everywhere. Somewhere around the D's, I had to put the book aside and wish that Huberman was as non-existent as God.
