Having gone up often in small aircraft with my Dad as pilot, and having absorbed some of his interest in early aviation - the details and trials of these early aviators were vividly brought to life by Mr. Cussler, and made me miss the smell of aviation fuel, and the hum and thrill of flying. The story also brought to life the courage of the early pilots and the passion of the mechanics and inventors. Interwoven with the technical details is the conflict, choices, and cruelty of Harry Frost, and the story of the web of alliances he has made throughout his life that enable him to hound cross-continent race of aviators with near-impunity. Harry is relentlessly pursued by detective Isaac Bell of the Van Doorn Detective Agency, who clearly remembers three young newsboys murdered by Harry many years earlier.

I read Cussler because his books are easy reads; minimal amount of characters, fun setting, quick pace. This book met all those criteria and I was easily able to plow through it in a half a week.

However, that being said, this book is another example of his overly cliche adventures filled with silly dialogue, infallible protagonists, and plots with multiple loopholes. While I will probably read another Cussler in a few months from now (just because of the raw simplicity & easiness), I think I will have to take a break so his triteness doesn't scare me away from reading for good!

I am a big fan of Clive Cussler - especially the Isaac Bell series. Set in 1910 in the early era of aviation, the historical details are informative and fascinating, and the adventure interesting and fast-paced. It took a special kind of person to take to the air in the flimsy "aeroplanes" of the period, and Cussler captures this aspect ss well. Highly recommended.

Perhaps a little larger than life - but an interesting read. Secret agents, detectives, action, twists, etc. Again a typical Cussler plotline. If you are looking for a quick read and a good story based in the early age of flight - The Race will not dissappoint.

I found there was too much detail about planes. I did however like the detective. The large print made it easy to read
