Book Description

June 2006
When civil unrest strikes a planet, when invaders get past the navy and start their ground assault, when terrorist forces attempt to topple a government, you can call for help. Planets contact the last vestige of ground soldiery: Mercenaries. As long as the mercenaries get paid, as long as everybody plays by the rules, everything is fine. Captain Todd Rook is in charge of an elite fighting force: The Radiation Angels. Armed with searing plasma cannons, armor piercing railguns, or semi-smart explosives, these are the high tech warriors who get the dangerous jobs done. Though contracted to enter battle on Ashley 9, at every turn it appears that their employers are set on making their job as difficult as possible. They were promised generous pay, an easy battle, and spoils of war. All these promises are broken. Faced with economic ruin, Rook decides to bet his life and the lives of the Angels on a long shot that will put them all in mortal peril. It's a gamble that will take them across the known universe to the most lawless planet in all the colonies: Mars. Chased by cyborgs, enemy mercenaries, and an aerospace task force, Rook has bet that everything he cares about up... The Chimerium Gambit.

4.0 out of 5 stars good first novel; a new young author to watch May 12 2007
By Linda F. Reed - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Good story line, great action scenes. I have scant appreciation for the enumeration of weaponry; makes it sound like a gaming manual. Waiting impatiently for the next book in the series. I look forward to watching this author grow in his craft.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Birth of a New Series Jun 25 2006
By D. Stephen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you are a fan of military fiction, science fiction or otherwise, than the Radiation Angels: The Chimerium Gambit (RA:TCG) is a needed addition to your collection. Not only for the book itself, but for the promise of the Radiation Angels saga yet to come.

RA:TCG introduces us to the Radiation Angels, a futuristic mercenary company. The story opens with the RA in the employee of a planetary faction bent on overthrowing the current government. While the story leads us down an action-packed road of combat and conflict resolution, it soon takes an unexpected twist. It becomes a story about the key members of the RA and what defines them as individuals. Not only does Ross build a compelling description of believable characters - including a man-turned-machine who still has a soul - but also opens a window on the human race. Ross' builds an interesting sociological setting that is just as easily a commentary on the events of today. The story reaches depths of introspection worthy of the attention of straight-laced literary critics, but it is delivered in a grittier, less delicate sensibility that will appeal to readers looking for adventure as well as thought inspiring commentary.

One drawback is the size of the book, but like all good stories it leaves you wanting more. The story was also worthy of better proof reading, but the mistakes do not detract from the storyline.

Reading the RA:TCG is definitely time well spent. Fans of military fiction will be appreciative of the attention to military hardware, while those looking for a good story will not be disappointed by the flow of the action. The book also has the hallmarks of an introduction to an on-going saga that should entertain audiences for years to come.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cool sci-fi book without all the nerdy bullcrap ... Jun 14 2007
By Alexander Ehoodin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
First off I am not a fan of science fiction books but i loved this book. The character development was paced well and the imagery put a crystal clear picture in my head. The action sequences were everything you could hope for from a good sci-fi action movie. The chapters and the book in general were laid out perfectly,at no time during the read did i feel bored or like i wanted to skip a few pages. I want to see a movie version !
Keep an eye out and an ear open for the name James Ross because if he keep this up he'll be big, and wont you be in the cool crowd for knowing about him first !
