Book Description

Oct 27 2006 Treasures of Ancient Egypt
In this superbly illustrated volume, distinguished Egyptologist Zahi Hawass guides readers through the architectural landscape of ancient Egypt, from the houses and palaces of the living to the temples of the gods to the tombs of the dead. Hundreds of photographs and a compelling text unveil the mysteries of pharaonic Egypt as unearthed through major excavations, revealing fresh insight into how the ancient Egyptians lived, how they prepared for death, and how they perceived their own place within the universe. The Realm of the Pharaohs takes readers on a tour of the most important sites of ancient Egypt from the Pyramids at Giza to Abu Simbel to the Valley of the Kings. It recounts the history of the most famous kings and queens and shares details of the everyday lives of the people. Presented in a handsome slipcase, this book is made all the more compelling by the inclusion of the author's personal archaeological adventures. Hawass shares details of his distinguished career and reveals his own sense of awe of the magic and mystery of the pharaohs. Through his narrative, accompanied by a wealth of outstanding photographs, readers will learn little-known facts about the lives of the people and royalty of Ancient Egypt, as well as live vicariously through the anecdotes of one of Egypt's preeminent Egyptologists.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fabulous Supersized Egypt Jun 13 2007
By David A. Eitel - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
The physical size of this work is impressive, and the photographs spectacular. Some of the special affects on the photos will delight the most seasoned enthusiast. Commentary not too technical, for broader audience. Espcially like the slip-cover box, looks great on display. Definitely recommend for lovers of Egyptian antiquities.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gorgeous Photographs, and good information Mar 23 2007
By gilly8 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This is a HUGE coffee table book but has great photographs and also a lot of first rate information. The author is Zahi Hawass, you see his name on a lot of current Egyptian books because he is the head of Egyptian antiquities, all tomb openings, all artifacts, all exhibits that leave Egypt, go through him. If you can find this book used, reasonably, it is worth having.

4.0 out of 5 stars A very large and heavy book - but beautiful. July 17 2007
By Ronald E. Fellows - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I read a review of this new book in Ancient Egypt magazine, a British publication, and although the price was listed as 70 British Pounds, I decided to add it to my collection of 194 books on Ancient Egypt. Seventy pounds equals about $[...], but I quickly found it on Amazon.com for about $[...].

It is a big and beautiful book (and heavy), with stunning photographs. Well, mostly, - a couple are not so stunning (the photos of Luxor and Karnak Temples). Interesting that the photo of King Hor's Ka statue in the Cairo museum has had the Ka arms removed - photoshop? Why?

Comparing it to my other books on Egypt, it is a repeat of many of the photos, but most are in close-up or at least are larger. Yes, it is magnificent if difficult to handle. A few pages are four page fold-outs.

The text is also largely a repeat although it does put the others in context.

Anyway, buy it - it's a great price for a beautiful book.
