Beginning with a discussion of sexual reproduction at the molecular and cellular level, this volume of the Encyclopedia of the Human Body discusses the reproductive organs, hormones, conception through childbirth and development after birth including puberty. The history of research on the reproductive system is presented and the future of research in this field is considered. Current controversies and dilemmas are also explored. Reproductive system diseases and disorders, symptoms and treatments are discussed, including infertility, sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV and AIDS, complications with pregnancy, and genetic diseases such as Huntington's disease. This reference concludes with a discussion of ethics, a comprehensive glossary, and resources for further information including Web sites and contact information for organizations and national health institutions.

The Encyclopedia of the Human Body provides a complete, comprehensive reference source for students interested in the human body. Each book in this ten-volume set introduces and describes a specific body system, including the parts and function of each system, the history of discovery, related diseases and treatments, as well as future advances in research. Detailed illustrations and diagrams, including an eight-page color insert, provide a visual reference for written material.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good non-major textbook May 18 2011

I purchased this book to see if it would be a good textbook for freshman non-biology majors. It is written at the correct level, and covers all of the topics that I would include in the course material. This includes current topics like inheritance of mitochondrial DNA, genomic imprinting, and a very brief chapter on stem cells, cloning, and gene therapy. I would still have to supplement this information in the lecture material, but at least there is something in the text that students can read as background. This is not easy to find in non-major textbooks.

A very complete book covers all the topics that are related to the reproductive system. I've been searching for this kind of book a long time because it is not your basic story book reading. At last not the standard material which you will find in all the popular books. This book gives you all the details and the background you need to fully comprehend this system. It took me some time to understand all the matters that are addressed to. If you want some story telling book without a good comprehension of the deeper material don't buy this book. If you really want to know how it works I really would recommend this book.
