Review

"[Griffith's] aim was to traslate the Greek text as if it were a conversation, and he has succeeded admirably." Library Journal

"In addition to a vivid, dignified and accurate rendition of Plato's text, the student and general reader will find many aids to comprehension in this volume: an introduction that assesses the cultural background to the Republic, its place within political philosophy, and its general argument; succinct notes in the body of the text; an analytical summary of the work's content; a full glossary of proper names; a chronology of important events; and a guide to further reading. The result is an accomplished and accessible edition of this seminal work, suitable for philosophers and classicists as well as historians of political thought at all levels." African Sun Times Review of Books --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book April 3 2012

This book was just jaw dropping. Everyone knows the concepts of good and bad, everyone has their own belief that so and so is better than so and so and vice versa, a good person will bring out the attributes of the good life, a bad person will bring out the attributes of a wicked life, and each will try to prove theirs is better than the latter. Socrates single handedly proved the good life is much better than the bad/dishonorable life. Socrates proved this as a fact! In a series of questions and answers. The book is an interesting read, it will expand your horizons about life in general, and it will make you think twice about which life you'd be interested in heading towards.

I in my opinion believe every school should have a philosophy class, students should take that class as prerequisite if they want to go to college or university, and this book should be given to every student and read out loud once every week.

This is more of a review of the translation, as opposed to the text itself. The Republic is a classic, and like Shakespeare, or the Mona Lisa, needs no review or comment. Read more
