From the Author
One of my motherfs friends had a dream to travel along a mysterious river in Canada. When my mother told me some of the rumors of this river--the name of which she couldnft remember--I became hooked and a chilling story began to brew in my mind. The search was on to find that river.
The South Nahanni River in Canadafs rugged Northwest Territories is one of the most spectacular sights in the world. It is fraught with exquisite beauty and hidden dangers. It is also filled with an abundance of plant and animal life--not to mention, woven with legends eolder than dirtf, as my husband would say.
This may be the river to which my motherfs friend was referring. Or it may not. Nevertheless, the Nahanni River holds many secrets. Decades ago headless skeletons and corpses were discovered along its banks. Over the years, people have gone missing, and Ifve heard it referred to as the eBermuda Triangle of Canadaf.
Although THE RIVER is interwoven with fact, this novel is a work of fact...and fiction.
Ifll let you be the judge of which is which.
Take the ride of your life, down... THE RIVER
From the Inside Flap
Jakefs arm snaked out. gWait!h
She raised a hand, warding him off, then strode toward the far wall. She made it halfway across the room when the air shifted around her. She stopped.
There has to be something! Schroeder wouldnft lead us here for nothing.
She stepped forward, between the two strips of crystal.
And something weird happened.
The blue light of the crystals flaredcalive.
Jake pulled her back. gDonft go any closer, Del. Itfs not safe.h
His blue eyes pleaded with her, but she shook her head, ignoring him. Her father needed her. She was his only hope. And there was no way on earth that she had come this far only to give up.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Peter heave a frustrated groan. He muttered something beneath his breath, then stumbled between the crystals.
gPeter!h
Frozen with fear, she gulped in a huge breath as two slender trails of metallic sapphire light crawled down the cave walls toward him. The tentacles of light slithered across the floor, colliding at his feet. Inch by inch, they wrapped around his legs, throbbing to the beat of the alarm. Within seconds, he was enveloped in a strange liquid mercury radiance.
gOh my God,h she whispered.
Peterfs jaw dropped and his eyes widened, terrified. Bit by bit, his entire body disintegrated--each molecule separating, stretching grotesquely. He slowly becamecdust.
In a flash, Peter Cavanaugh was gone.
Del knew that there were times when a decision must be made, and made fast¯regardless of the possible outcome. A decision of fate. Or destiny.
Catching Jakefs eye, she threw him a beaming smile. Before he could stop her, she stepped between the crystals, welcoming the sapphire light that skimmed icily up her body.
Jakefs mouth opened in horror. gNo, Del!h She dissolved into an infinite number of particlesc
