Exceptional home entertainment!, Jan 4 2007
This review is from: The Road to Avonlea, Vol. 3 (DVD)
Just this year, I purchased all six seasons of Road to Avonlea (and am anxiously awaiting for the seventh season to be released!). It cost me a lot of money, but it was entirely worth it.
As a huge fan of Anne of Green Gables, I can remember watching Road to Avonlea to fill the void that AGG left. I did not watch all of the episodes as they aired on television, as I was away at University, but I do remember that, when I did watch them, it really felt like those old Sunday evenings when you were a child, sitting with your family, enjoying a show. Road to Avonlea is wholesome, humourous, engaging and warm.
So far, of the sets I bought, I have watched seasons one, two and three. The episodes are positively addictive! I can't help but watch four or five episodes at a time. I am pulled into the King Family lives, laughing at silly Aunt Olivia, rolling my eyes at stern Aunt Hetty and sighing wistfully as Gus Pike courts Felicity King.
Being a Canadian, I cannot help but be prejudiced toward the sheer beauty of PEI. And Kevin Sullivan, to his credit, did not skimp in the production of this show. The costumes, the sets, the landscapes, it is all perfect!
If you have never seen this show before, take the opportunity while these DVDs are still available. This show provides an exceptional type of home entertainment that is hard found in these times.
As for my review of season three specifically, I enjoyed some of these episodes most of all! Jasper Dale is so utterly charming and his marriage to Olivia was RTOA at its very best!
Sadly, the end of the season also sees the passing of Marilla Cuthbert. I have loved Marilla since the first Anne of Green Gables movie. Gruff on the outside and soft on the inside, Colleen Dewhurst played Marilla Cuthbert to perfection. I was saddened, then, to see how the production company handled her real life passing. The episode of Marilla's death was lacking. And the use of old footage from RTOA, AGG and even Lantern Hill, was slightly creepy. Out of all the episodes I have ever watched, this is the only one I take issue with. I think it would have been far better to have simply had Marilla die off screen. The producers did bring back Gilbert Blythe, and gave a reasonable excuse for Anne's abscence. But let's face it, h*ll would have had to have frozen over, before Anne Shirley would not have attended Marilla's funeral, no matter how sick she was. And it would have been lovely if Diana Barrie could have returned as well. But one episode cannot spoil an entire series.
Truly, this collection and series is something that Canadians can be proud of!
