Review

'A brilliant read, a book I simply couldn't put down. You become part of the adventure and all its ups and downs, and the book is bloody funny. It's like a cross between Ted Simon and Flann O'Brien - a cracker.' Hairy Biker Dave Myers 'An outstanding writing talent with a wicked sense of fun ... Brilliant writing, genuinely and originally funny.' Martyn Lewis, broadcaster 'Shift your arse, Kerouac, Geoff Hill's on the road. Faster, funnier and still alive.' Colin Bateman

Product Description

A Belfast travel writer and his Scottish sidekick take a lighthearted ride up the 16,500-mile Pan-American Highway. Hill proves an amiable, witty guide as he jaunts north through desert, mountain and woodlands. That's not to say he and traveling companion Clifford Paterson don't encounter some bumps in the road. These include a fairly serious crash along a remote stretch of road near Cali, Colombia; endless red tape at a half-dozen Latin-American border crossings; and a ban on beer throughout Central America during Easter Week. . . Hill's breezy, humorous narrative contains just enough dollops of history and local culture to satisfy travel fans. An easy, entertaining read, perfect for plane rides and road trips. -Kirkus Reviews, 10/15/2007

2.0 out of 5 stars The Gobblers at bit of a Knob...., Jan 17 2009
This review is from: The Road to Gobblers Knob: From Chile to Alaska on a Motorbike (Paperback)
PIcked up the book recently, excited by the title. I am a biker myself and always enjoy good road and adventure travel stories. This story mind you is a bit misleading. The cover says "the biker who conquered the Pan American Highway". Well, first things first. He didn't do it alone, so it really is bikers..plural. Not to mention that he takes much of the credit of the story with the appearance that he did it alone, his sidekick Clifford is definitely mentioned, but you wouldn't know it by the cover. Conquered...well, he crashes in Colombia hard on the road surface because of poor rider awarness and speed (not due to bandits or sacred cows), doesn't sound too much like conquering to me. Clifford appears to survive unscathed. Also, Geoff Hill spends a lot of his time talking about all the great things he has done in his life, and how he misses his wife...albeit a bit too much. It is like he is trying to convince the reader that his writing endeavours and his wife are the most fantastic thing going. His other book also (especially the title) tends to paint this guy as some biker travel hero...'A Way to Go'...two of the worlds greatest motorcycle journeys"...please spare me. If you want to talk about great journeys read "One Man Caravan" or "Two wheels through Terror". Jeremy Kroeker's book "Motorcycle Therapy" is also a worthy mention...with humor that is actually funny.

4.0 out of 5 stars A writers ride adventure., Mar 12 2012

This is not your average guy on a bike writing about his trip, Geoff Hill is a writer and a good one, so put that with a bike and the combination should add up. It does. If you like travelogues and particularly bike adventures this should be a good read for you. There is planty of background given about the lives of the riders, so its not an A to B account about waking, eating, getting fuel and riding. Theres a fair bit of unplanned adventure, a hairy spill, and Geoff's companion in advanture is an Irish, ex. IoM racer, with a sence of humour to equal the balls you need to ride the Island as only the Irish can.

Good book, good read.
