Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

With this second Russian suspense novel, which focuses on the restoration of the Romanov dynasty, Berry shows he's honed his craft since his somewhat shaky debut, The Amber Room (2003). Miles Lord, a workaholic African-American lawyer from Atlanta, is in Moscow to help Stefan Baklanov, the Romanov claimant his high-powered firm is backing. Since the new tsar will reign as an autocrat like his ancestors, both big rubles and big bucks are at stake—not to mention access to nuclear weapons. Lord soon discerns that Baklanov is corrupt, a tool of the mafiya. While digging through old files on the Russian Revolution, Lord comes to believe Baklanov is the "raven" Rasputin predicted would help save the royal house in 1916. Teaming with a beautiful acrobat, Akilina Petrov of the Moscow Circus, Lord attempts to discover whether any children of Nicholas II escaped Lenin's executioners. A series of exotic clues propel the pair on an international scavenger hunt. Berry uses Russia—past and present—to excellent effect and makes sharp observations about the contemporary Russian scene, such as the racism Lord encounters throughout the country. The book's villain needs a bit more development, but this doesn't detract much from a solid tale a cut above—and then some—many thrillers on the market.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unputdownable, Mar 15 2006
This review is from: The Romanov Prophecy: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I picked up this book while I was on summer vacation in Italy, as it was one of the few english books that I could find. I am a very picky reader and I had never heard of Steve Berry before, so I was incredibly surprised to find the book so captivating. It begins as a political fiction novel, and then turns into an historical thriller of Dan Brown's proportions. I could not put it down until I finished it, and as soon as I got back to the US I ran to the store to buy all other Steve Berry's books. In my opinion, this remains his best.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great mix of historical fact & fanciful fiction!, Jun 3 2005

This review is from: The Romanov Prophecy: A Novel (Mass Market Paperback)
I'm usually leery of fiction that combines "what if?" questions about key moments in history with Ludlum-esque thriller motifs, but I'm happy to report that this time, it all comes together in a sitting-on-the-back-deck-taking-it-easy-with-a-400-page-I bought-it-at-the-airport-book kind of way.

You might think that calling this "airport fiction" is damning with faint praise -- but hey, for $10.99, I try to manage my expectations!

Where this book is particularly successful is in its integration of up-to-the-minute information about the fate of the Romanovs in 1918 and beyond. At the end of the book, the author provides a useful explanation of where history leaves off and his imagination takes over ... and as someone who owns about 1,000 books about European royalty, I am pleased to endorse this particular title!

Yes. I totally agree with the other positive reviews of this book. It's a fantastic little read. There were a few moments in the book where author Steve Berry threw in a twist that literally made me scream out loud & made me wonder how a person's brain can think of such dramatic turns!

The Writer's Note at the end describing where fact separates from fiction is much appreciated. Read it last, though, because you might be as shocked as I was to see how much of this amazing tale is actually based on truth. Proving that, in regards to the Romanov family: "the truth of their ultimate fate is far more scintillating than fiction."

But in this fact-meets-fiction book, it's a total treat!
