Book Description

April 15 2011
Susanna Kearsley is the Winner of the Romantic Times Book Reviews Reviewer's Choice Award for Best Historical Fiction novel for 2010 (for The Winter Sea).

When Eva's film star sister Catrina dies, she leaves California and returns to Trelowarth, Cornwall, where they spent their childhood summers, to scatter Catrina's ashes and thus return her to the place where she belongs.
But in doing so Eva must confront ghosts from her own past, as well as those from a time long before her own. For the house where she so often stayed as a child is home not only to her old friends the Hallets, but also to the people who had lived there in the eighteenth century. Eva finds herself able to see and talk to these people, and she falls for Daniel Butler, a man who lived and died long before she herself was born.
Eva begins to question her place in the present, and in laying her sister to rest, comes to realise that she too must decide where she really belongs, choosing between the life she knows and the past she feels so drawn towards.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful time travel May 27 2011
By Pamela Mckinnon TOP 500 REVIEWER

I liked this book a lot and it certainly kept my attention. Having said that I did think there were certain holes in the storyline. Additionally I kept expecting more exciting things to happen when Eva was in the past. I also kept wondering why when she arrived back in time why everyone was so accepting of her. Well it is a story after all and time travel is a mythical thing so you just have to accept that when reading this book. I loved the fact it was based in Cornwall which is an area of England I love. It reminded me a bit of Daphne Du Maurier and Frenchman's Creek. Ironically when Kearsley is telling the story and describing the small village where the story takes place, I thought wow that sounds just like a place I visited called Polperro. At the end I read the author's note and sure enough she had written the story with Polperro in mind. I thought that was excellent writing to describe a place so well. I have read a few of Kearley's books and my favourite by far is Mariana. Up to now, this is my second favourite. It is a good interesting read and makes you wish you could experience time travel like that. One thing I love about Kearsly is she writes about time travel but there is no ghostly occult connotations to it. The stories are not spooky but they are interesting. This type of story is hard to find in a time travel type novel. I recommend this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good summer read Jun 27 2011
Format:Paperback
Although not as absorbing as Mariana, The Rose Garden is an enjoyable read and Susanna Kearsley remains one of my favorite authors.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favourite book in years May 13 2011
Format:Paperback
My very favorite Kearsley novel, and since she's one of my favorite authors in the world, that is saying a LOT. This book created a world of its own and sucked me straight in. I wished I never had to leave. It was so rich and vivid and ohhhhh, so deeply, deeply, romantic. It was also one of the most cleverly managed time travel novels I've ever read.

The eighteenth century sections were exciting and vivid, full of smuggling and action and danger along with an incredibly moving and powerful romance, the modern sections were lovely too, and they all just fit together perfectly. I am in awe of Kearsley's storytelling abilities.

If you grew up reading & loving Barbara Michaels/Elizabeth Peters and/or Mary Stewart, I can't imagine that you wouldn't love Susanna Kearsley, too. Read this book! :)
