HASH(0x9ab90750) out of 5 stars An underrated series Sept. 29 2005
By J. Lawrence - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I read the 'Secret of the Unicorn Queen' many years ago when they were first released, I adored them then and I'm glad to see that things that I loved then are still present now.

The series follows a young teenage girl name Sheila who has a pretty normal life, the only thing out of the ordinary is her relationship with Dr. Rite an eccentric scientist.

When a accident happens involving his affectionate cat and a untested invention Sheila finds herself in the world of Arren, where unicorns are real, magic exists. She meets a group of women determined to free the land from a tyrant. Sheila joins them and can't help but get caught up in the fight.

While the book doesn't break any barriers and doesn't bring anything new to the genre it's still a solidly written story with likable characters, and engaging plot and even a few laughs.

Though intended for younger readers I think this series has appeal for older ones as well and not just as nostalgia.

I fell in love with this series after only being able to get my hands on book #4, and that was over 15 years ago!! I'm SO GLAD they decided to reprint the first two books in the series so I now know how Sheila's adventures began -- even as an adult I am enjoying reading these books! I hope the whole series is reprinted -- and very soon!! :)

HASH(0x9a34f288) out of 5 stars Great Fun Dec 18 2004
By Laura - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
A solidly written, nicely plotted, well told series, with engaging characters, an disingenuous heroine and the standard elements of romance, adventure, mystery and excitement. The real hook is the main character, Sheila, portrayed as an ordinary girl who gets sucked into an alternate dimension of magic, unicorns, sorcerers and righteous, sword wielding women rebels. What young girl does not find this a delicious tale? A plain old fun read, addictive and cheesy, but better written than many and with some very good interpersonal development between characters.

I'm buying this for my sister for her 24th birthday! When we were young we read this series, I used to have to order it in from my local bookstore as no one else knew of it then. She is going to be so thrilled, we have read and re read the series, dosn't matter your age - what modern day girl dosn't want to ride a unicorn, weild a sword, practise magic and maybe kiss a warrior!

I won't give a spoiler (read other reviews for that).

I remember getting this when my mother took me to have my ears re-pierced. The nice sales lady who was doing my ears and saw how much it bothered me asked my mother what I liked and my mother told her books, books, and more books. The woman told me that the bookstore just 3 shops down had a nice unicorn series I might like. My mother took me down there immediately to look and I found this series.

My only regret is that the series did end after 6 books. I've always felt that there was more there that could have been done with it. The main character (Sheila) is a strong female that had the ability to be developed further with tween girls in mind. These are not thick, heavy books. They're a quick read, even for your average tween.

I still have all 6 on my book shelf after all this time.

If you love a girl that doesn't just put up with what's handed to her, has a backbone, can be taught to swing a sword, and you love magic and unicorns, then this is the series for you.
