Book Description

Jan 8 2008
The Six-Figure Speaker shows professional speakers a variety of ways to earn a high six figure income doing what they love to do. Cathleen Fillmore openly shares what she's learned operating a bureau and working with individual speakers over the years. She's also interviewed some of the world's top paid speakers and discovered that not one has taken a strictly conventional route to success. They talk candidly about what has worked for them and what pitfalls speakers need to avoid.Cathleen has held nothing back in her straight talk with speakers on how they can create their own formula for six-figure success in the professional speaking arena. She'll suggest a few different routes to take and some to absolutely avoid on the way to the top. There is information in this book that you won't find anywhere else.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great if you want to work with Bureaus Oct 14 2011
By Mark Twain Jr. TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
This book is an interesting book written by a bureau owner. It has lots of info on working with bureaus. As for becoming a "Six Figure Speaker" there's not so much.

In fact the only reason it's called Six Figure Speaker is because she was told a book on working with bureaus wouldn't work, "I started out writing a book on working with bureaus until Ian Percy kindly told me that a speaker had written a book on that topic and it didn't sell well." (p74).

A lot of the chapters in the book book are short one written by other writers and many of these chapters seem to be vehicles to promote the other writers own stuff.

This book doesn't have an index and so once you've read it, it can be hard to find pertinent information when you need it. Also the cover, design and name seem very similar to The Wealthy Speaker by Jane Atkinson. Overall some good info on working with a bureau if you are already an accomplished speaker. But if you don't want to work with a bureau it might seem to be a bit too pushy since most chapters tend to send you in that direction.

5.0 out of 5 stars A WONDERFUL RESOURCE! Aug 19 2010
By Nadja
Format:Paperback
I took aside a few days to carefully read Cathleen Filmore's book The Six-Figure Speaker. I am a young professional speaker with a decade of experience sharing my story and message but with lots to learn still ahead of me. I found this book inspiring, full of information and stories from Cathleen who has many years of experience, as well as from numerous successful speakers whose stories are featured in the book.

I especially appreciated the chapter about Bureaus. It was straightforward and it answered many of my questions. Another chapter I found extremely useful covers fees and contracts and how to negotiate the best fee.

Aside from being practical, this book also motivates me to be the best and most successful speaker I can be. I am encouraged and inspired by the stories of those who have truly succeeded in this field and who share their successes but also their challenges and mistakes. As I was reading their stories of personal realizations and achievements, I felt excited and grateful to gain knowledge from their various perspectives. Personally, I find it thrilling and invaluable to read what techniques other successful speakers have employed on their journey to success.

Finally, I loved the fact that each chapter starts off with a quote. The quote often sets the tone for the chapter and its message. I found myself underlining and writing notes about many things in this book and I know I will go to it frequently for useful information as well as motivation. What a great resource!
I would HIGHLY recommend this book to anyone who wants to succeed in this wonderful and competitive field!

5.0 out of 5 stars Thought it was going to be a rip-off of another book on the subject but ended up LOVING it!!!! Feb 17 2008

To be totally honest I thought this book was going to be a total rip-off of Jane Atkinson's book The Wealthy Speaker. The cover, etc. looked a little too similar to me. I thought I'd order it to check it out to be sure and I'm THRILLED I did.

Are you a speaker just starting out or a seasoned pro? I'm sure if you are in either group you'll enjoy this book. She covers putting your one sheet together, dealing with bureaus, etc. It's NOT a copy of Jane's book and a wonderful addition to any speaker's library. Jane's book offers more of a step by step plan to get from where you are to being the "Wealthy Speaker" but, I think Cathleen offers a lot of other useful information that's not in Jane's book. From websites to one sheets, bureaus to referrals, repeat clients to getting new clients, it's ALL in here. As another reviewer wrote "it has nothing to do with how to project your voice, how to organize a speech, or how to overcome shyness. " I do think it's a book that was designed for people that are already in the business BUT... I think it's also for those even thinking about getting into the business. Be the end of this book you'll know what a ride you are in for, how the business works, etc. It's good to have a jump start.

This book is VERY under-priced. Buy it NOW before Cathleen comes to her senses and charges what it's really worth.

It's time to read this book again with my highlighter in hand.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fluff! This book was faxed in. Jan 10 2010
By David Wills - Published on Amazon.com

There are some books that are written from a well thought out outline where an author really wants to take you through a subject from start to finish. This is not one of those books.

It is a collection of thrown together articles from other authors who are trying to sell their own projects. Nothing unscrupulous here...just an utter lack of flow. Just google "Becoming a Speaker Tips" and you could make up the same book in a couple of minutes.

Compare this to Fred Gleeck's "Marketing and Promoting Your our Seminars and Workshops". This book is written by a veteran "in the trenches" author who single handedly takes you through in a turnkey way.

I guess I wouldn't be so hard on the Six Figure book if I hadn't just read Gleeck's book. NO COMPARISON! I would recommend Gleek's book in a heartbeat. So much so that I just threw "the Six Figure Speaker" in the trash.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not for the Novice July 21 2009
By Martin Gollery - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
Cathleen Filmore knows her stuff. This is a business book, not a replacement for toastmasters.

Like one of the other reviewers, I wish this was a bit more stepwise. Also, some of the information is dated. The absence of social networking sites is understandable, as they are rather new. On the other hand, one of the guest writers talks about searching with Archie, which was a pre-web search engine from the late '80's. This should be updated.

Still, you will be able to learn from this book, and I highly recommend it!
