1/32 scale slot racing, made popular by Scalextric, is enjoyed by all ages. Half the fun of the hobby is taking apart, tuning, upgrading and reassembling the cars, but until now this has been a black art.

I ordered the Slot Car Handbook based on comments I read on the Slot Car Forum. Given that the highly acclaimed Slot Car Bible was selling for over $100 on this site, and was several years old, and this book was more recent, I thought I would give it a go.

The content is well laid out and I have learned some things about car maintenance etc. that I did not know. Info about the track options and designs is about the same level as one could obtain on the internet given sufficient time and patience.

Overall I found this book a good (very good?) reference and will use it more as I delve into the hobby more. If you are looking for a technical book on tracks and layouts this is not the one. However, if you want more info about the cars and slot racing in general, this will do you fine.

Given it is written in 2007 is does address digital racing but not in as much depth as I had hoped. The author has suggested on the Slot Car Forum that he is researching a new book with more attention on digital. If that is your main interest, or if you are new to the hobby, this book will do until the new one is eventually released.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple but ok Dec 18 2007
By A. Tomanik - Published on Amazon.com
the relatively smal handbook justifies the title. Through simple chapters it covers the basics and some hints about the slot hobby.
Larger coverage would be appreciated, but its objective text and figures are a good addition to the hobby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very good introduction Nov. 23 2008
By Matthew Agnew - Published on Amazon.com
This is a small book, but covers a lot of the basics of slot car racing. An excellent introduction to the sport, but if you've been racing and reading the internet forums for a year or so there won't be much new in here for you.

That said, good info and nicely printed. Advanced info is best found online, in forums such as slotforum and slotcarillustrated.

They should include this book in every new slot car set!

I really enjoyed reading this book. It gave a great overview of everything. It is designed for someone getting into the hobby like myself. The book is a little shorter than I expected, but all of the key elements are in there. Lots of pics and an easy read.

Hi there,
I have just recently read book, the book tends to be more for those who have just entered or are about to enter into the slot car hobby. It gives an over view of every thing to do with the cars, racing, tracks and every thing that goes to make a slot car race track. A good book for those just entering the hobby.
