Praise for The Small-Cap Investor

"The great rewards of investing in the best small-cap companies are matched only by the risks of investing in the worst. Ian Wyatt is one of the few who not only shows you how to find the hidden gems, but also how to avoid the flea-ridden dogs. His new book is a must-read for all small-cap investors, especially in today's turbulent times."
—Martin D. Weiss, author of the New York Times bestseller, The Ultimate Depression Survival Guide

"Small-cap stocks are now the best source of wealth-building because there is now little to zero research on them—use Ian's stock discovery methods and find the ten-bagger innovative companies underneath Wall Street's radar."
—Tobin Smith, founder of ChangeWave Research and costar of the Fox News show Bulls & Bears

"I love small-cap stocks. Why invest for 10% returns when you can find ten-baggers? But no one said it was easy. There are a kazillion names and every one of them sounds like a winner. Ian Wyatt, in his very informative book, The Small-Cap Investor, shows you how to find them, analyze them, and ride them for all they're worth."
—Andy Kessler, New York Times columnist and bestselling author of Running Money and Wall Street Meat

"Ian has written the essential guide for anybody who wants to understand how to make big money in the stock market. His eight-step program shows how to identify and invest in the small companies that will become tomorrow's mega-winners."
—Michael Moe, cofounder and CEO of NeXt Asset Management and author of Finding the Next Starbucks

"The one area of the entire financial markets where the individual investor can actually have an edge on the institutional investor is small-cap stocks. Ian Wyatt's book, The Small-Cap Investor, is your field manual for big profits. His strategies could help you find the big winners of tomorrow, perhaps even the next Cisco, Dell, Microsoft, or Wal-Mart."
— Dr. Stephen Leeb, editor of The Compelte Investor and author of The Coming

From the Inside Flap

Small-cap stocks, those publicly traded companies with market capitalizations less than $2 billion, can yield significant gains that are impossible to find in larger stocks. They've also proven to be among the most attractive investments after a financial downturn. Unfortunately, information about how to successfully invest in these smaller companies has been hard to find—until now.

Author Ian Wyatt is dedicated to helping investors find great companies at bargain prices before Wall Street or Main Street catches on. As the Chief Investment Strategist of SmallCapInvestor.com, he's guided countless individuals in their quest to capture small-cap investing success. Now, with The Small-Cap Investor, Wyatt will help you do the same.

Throughout the book, Wyatt clearly outlines his proven investment process and the systems that are involved—detailing eight straightforward steps you need to take to find, research, and analyze small-cap stocks that could put big gains in your portfolio. Page by page, he takes the time to explain the essential criteria involved in picking the right stocks and timing your buy/sell decisions. Topics touched upon include:

  • Identifying growth trends and market sectors positioned for rapid growth in the years to come

  • Secrets for finding undiscovered small caps before they are embraced by the financial media and institutional investors

  • Understanding the fundamentals of a potential investment, including products, services, and management's ability to run the business

Along the way, Wyatt not only shows you how to find winners, but also addresses how to avoid losers. This is particularly important for investors who have experienced losses in their portfolios, and are looking to grow their portfolios in the coming years.

Many of today's top large-cap companies—from Microsoft to Wal-Mart—all started out small and grew to become dominant forces in their respective industries. Investors who bought these great companies early on profited handsomely. By following Wyatt's guidance, and understanding his strategies for finding winners, you'll have a huge edge over other investors and be in a better position to profit from the exponential growth of the right small-cap companies.

1.0 out of 5 stars Save your money and stick to the teachings of Graham and Dodd, Mar 12 2011

This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I've read a lot of value investing books including The Intelligent Investor, Security Analysis, and any book on Warren Buffett or Benjamin Graham that I could find. I thought this book overall was 98% fluff. The section on financial statement analysis was fair but still rather weak. Ian tells you to look for companies that are small, earning a profit and are growing but doesn't dig deep and cover any good examples on analyzing a specific business or company that meets the fundamentals that he discusses. It would have been very helpful if he could have covered the fundamentals then look at a couple of successful and unsuccessful examples or case studies applying the fundamentals. He does mention a few stocks that he recommended through his website that did decent but doesn't teach you well on how to do the analysis yourself. He doesn't cover much on earnings or asset valuation which I was very disappointed. I don't think he mentions anything discussing book value or digging deep into the balance sheet comparing net asset value or book value to market value. All very high level discussion with a big push to his website. Overall, I felt the book was inspirational when it comes to investing in small cap stocks but very weak on the practical application of security analysis. Price is what you pay and value is what you get. Save your money and stick to the teachings of Ben Graham whose principals are timeless. As Buffett says, "...those who read their Graham and Dodd will continue to prosper".

2.0 out of 5 stars A guide to investing, but only with a flavoring of small cap concepts, Jun 6 2011

This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I wanted to like this book. Small cap investing is a terrific idea, and I was hoping this book could tell me all about. And it can... sort of. This is a book about investing, but it only has a flavoring of small cap stocks.

The bulk of this book is about fundamental analysis, technical analysis, and diversification. These are all incredibly important topics, and the author covers them in an easy-to-read style. But these chapters could just as easily be pulled out of any investment book. Fundamentals? Read The Intelligent Investor. Tech analysis? stockcharts.com's guides or Bollinger on Bollinger Bands. Diversification? Check out Robert Shiller's lecture on the subject at iTunesU for free.

All those concepts in an easy-to-read manner would be a reason for buying this book if he actually showed you how to apply it to small cap stocks. However, he doesn't. What's more, the most small-cap-centric chapter, on how to find good candidates, speaks in generalizations and uses large cap stocks for examples!

If you're a complete novice to investments, this might be a good book for you. For everyone else, skip it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic resource!, Sep 8 2009
By David Trout - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Small-Cap Investor: Secrets to Winning Big with Small-Cap Stocks (Hardcover)
I have thoroughly enjoyed Ian's book, The Small-Cap Investor. As an active investor, I am always looking for new strategies that I can implement in my investment portfolio. Small-cap stocks have never been a big component of my investing strategy. However, after reading this book I realize that there is a significant opportunity to profit by investing in small cap, unknown companies. The strategies put forth in this book have provided me with the tools to successfully profit and grow my investment portfolio. Active investors who are looking for tips on how to find unknown small cap stocks on the verge of rapid growth will find this book to be a very helpful resource."
