Product Description

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 3 Hairy Maclary, a perky Scottish terrier, goes for a walk one day and is joined by his canine companions along the way. On their stroll, they meet Scarface Claw, a fierce tomcat whose fearsome cry causes all to turn tail and run. The last page shows Hairy Maclary peering timidly out from under the blanket that covers his basket. In Hairy Maclary's Bone , Hairy finds himself doggedly pursued again after the butcher hands him a tasty bone. In order to elude his pursuers, Hairy leads them on an obstacle course through hedges, signs and a boat yard, and the competition is eliminated one by one. Simply told in cumulative verse opposite each colorful illustration, the stories provide a pleasantly amusing experience for young readers or listeners. The Smallest Turtle tells the tale of a sea turtle's instinctive trek to the sea after birth. The dangers of the journey, the hot sun and hungry gulls, are successfully avoided and left behind as the little turtle takes his first ocean swim. Save for the lack of rhyming text, the style and format are the same as in the Hairy Maclary titles. This one will serve as a natural science expedition for the curious young. 5.0 out of 5 stars Early childhood favourite, May 25 2001

The smallest Turtle is one of my favourite children's books. Lynley Dodd is a New Zealand Children's book author who has written and illustrated many popular children's picture books, including "Hairy McClary from Donaldsdon Dairy", " Scattercat" and " My Cat Likes to Hide in Boxes."

As an early childhood lecturer in Australia, I use " The smallest Turtle" In my language and literature and environmental science classes. The only problem with this book is that it is so popular that one of my students has chosen not to return it and I find myself without a copy now that it is out of print.

The smallest turtle is the story of a turtle as it hatches from an egg and follows his journey towards the sea. " To the sea, to the sea" He hears the voice inside his head. The journey unfolds with many of the hurdles that a turtle faces, birds who wish to eat him, the hot sun and a range of obstacles.

Lynly Dodd always uses a simple text on one page with a full page clear illustration on the other. They are perfect for story groups in early childhood settings. I would highly recommend this delighful story to parents and educators.
