Book Description

April 4 2007
Parents will do almost anything to get their kids to eat healthier, but unfortunately, they've found that begging, pleading, threatening, and bribing don't work. With their patience wearing thin, parents will “give in" for the sake of family peace, and reach for “kiddie" favorites-often nutritionally inferior choices such as fried fish sticks, mac n' cheese, Pop-sicles, and cookies. Missy Chase Lapine, former publisher of 'Eating Well' magazine, faced the same challenges with her two young daughters, and she sought a solution. Now in 'The Sneaky Chef', Lapine presents over 75 recipes that ingeniously disguise the most important superfoods inside kids' favorite meals. With the addition of a few simple make-ahead purees or clever replacements, (some may surprise you!) parents can pack more fiber, vitamins, and antioxidants in their kids' foods. Examples of “Sneaky" recipes include: No Harm Chicken Parm Power Pizza Incognito Burritos Guerilla Grilled Cheese Brainy Brownies Health-by-Chocolate Cookies Quick fixes for Jell-O(R)

5.0 out of 5 stars She will show you HOW Oct 27 2007

I read a number of books about nutrition so I know WHAT is a nutritious meal, but until now I not always new HOW to cook it so as havlff it is not left on the dishes by my husband and especially my kids. Sneaky Chef helped me a lot in that department. Good job Missy Chase! The book is not expensive so I suggest to get it and try it out, it is really helpful. And if you need more info on proper food combination, add to it Can We Live 150 Years

I also purchased the Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids and Deceptively Delicious by Jessica Seinfeld. In comparison I found that the Sneaky Chef books require more work whereas the Jessica Seinfeld book is simple and effortless.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Aug 13 2012

With a very picky and texture sensitive child, I had already been employing a lot of "hiding" strategies as far as foods and purees. Of course "some" veggies is better than none, but I think the tiny amounts of healthy foods added to a lot of "junky" foods was too small to be helpful, and might lead you to be complacent and stop trying to introduce healthy foods to be eaten and appreciated for what they are "hey.. they got cauliflower in that frosting.. mission accomplished" .. a couple of tbsp of watered down puree in a bowl of icing is not getting in the veg and not worth the time and effort in my opinion. I do applaud the massive effort put into making all these purees, and I can COMPLETELY identify with the author's struggles with ultra picky kids (I've done that same weeping while my son refused/threw up even the most kid friendly foods while my sisters kids scarfed down tomatoes, peppers and salmon.)
