We have recently emigrated from the UK and had this as a video for our son, who watched it every year in the lead up to Christmas. Because it made a big impact on my son we bought it for our granddaughter who is just over 3 years. She was enthralled and every time she visits she wants to see The Snowman and has every intention of building her own in our back yard when the snow starts of fall. PS my husband and I love it too.

This lovely story is beautifully illustrated, I presume by Raymond Briggs, U.K. The Intro., David Bowie's voice, is superb. Howard Blake's music is extraordinarily haunting and gentle, and the boy's singing voice is worthy of Heaven; Lyrics, also by Raymond Briggs. This book, video and now DVD is an All-Time Classic for me; I love every minute of it! I downloaded the lyrics from the Internet, Beiggs' "Walking In The Air". I recently viewed the film with a very bright 3yr. old girl from Australia, after we had built a snowman, up the mountain behind my home. At the end, when Snowman had melted, my little friend sobbed and sobbed, concerned that the (Raymond Briggs') Snowman should live forever. The story, and film are enjoyed by all ages. Nominated: Best Animated Short Film, 1982 is still a Christmas Classic in my view. It is so very English, most refreshing, and void of all the glitz, primary colours, action and hyperbolie that U.S. creations are made, to impress children.
RoyaL Doulton china has manufactured a small set of china, of the illustratedd Snowman, and I have managed to find a few pieces, second-hand. They are delightful!

Being from the UK, where this story originated, I watched this short film at least three times a Christmas from the date of its release. I am now 31 and immigrated to Canada in Sept 2010; December 2010 was the first Christmas I had without watching this film and it broke my heart. Therefore, I have now ordered it and am patiently awaiting its arrival. My Canadian colleagues are all as equally excited to see this film. I cannot stress how ah-may-zing this film is and urge you all to buy a copy. Forget red 'Santas' and all the other Hollywood Christmas chintz... this is the real spirit of Christmas contained in a DVD.

What an awesome video! I had a VHS tape in the UK of this and we watched it every Christmas. When we moved to Canada we forgot about it as it was PAL. I bought a copy from Amazon.ca and we just watched it again on DVD. Although this video was made 30+ years ago it is just as relevant and enjoyable today. The dreams of a boy come to life. Clever man Raymond Briggs.
