This Show Really Is Spectacular,
By The Wiz! (In the concrete with the living) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Spectacular Spider-Man: Season 1 (DVD)
I was at first skeptical when I saw the previews for this show. The animation is quite simple, and the past reincarnations of Spider-man as a cartoon have not been overly entertaining. I assumed that this show would be more of the same. Boy was I wrong! The Spectacular Spider-Man is all I could possibly want from a kids cartoon. Actually, its really not for kids. The writing is great, (with few exceptions, such as Peter and Eddie Brock aka Venom calling each other bro) the simple animation and art style lends itself to exceptional action sequences, and more important than anything, this just FEELS like Spider-Man. The overall effect is a show enjoyable for all ages, but the sometimes darker subject matter definitely appeals to an older youth audience. Just like in the comics, Spider-Man faces girl issues galore, and continually struggles with using his powers for the greater good. The end result is a show that feels relatable, and thats what Spider-Man has always been about. This is a hero you really want to cheer for. And speaking of the hero, Spider-Man is portrayed incredibly well in this series. Josh Keaton, the voice of Spider-Man, does a terrific job in portraying the webslinger. Unlike in the Spider-Man movies, this Spider-Man is a real mouthpiece when battling his foes. Some of his quips are truly very funny. And as Peter Parker, Keaton is equal parts dorky and engaging. Keaton really is the star of the show, and I couldn't imagine anyone doing a better job. In fact, all the voice work for this show is fantasic. Some other standouts would have to be the Green Goblin, Doc Ock, the Black Cat, and of course, J Jonah Jameson. As for the show's content, basically there is a new villain introduced each week. Classic villains such as Sandman, the Rhino, Electro, Green Goblin, and Doctor Octopus all get their screen time, and boy is it fun to watch them duke it out with good ol' Spidey. What it all comes down to is this: The Spectacular Spider-Man is a well-written, carefully crafted, and action packed show. Don't let the simple animation fool you. This encarnation of Spider-Man is a wonderful look at the joys and sorrows of the teenage years. I promise that if you like Spider-Man, you'll LOVE this show.
