I Am Not Perfect is a simple  statement of profound truth, the first step toward  understanding the human condition, for to deny  your essential imperfection is to deny yourself and  your own humanity. The spirituality of  imperfection, steeped in the rich traditions of the Hebrew  prophets and Greek thinkers, Buddhist sages and  Christian disciples, is a message as timeless as it is  timely. This insightful work draws on the wisdom  stories of the ages to provide an extraordinary  wellspring of hope and inspiration to anyone  thirsting for spiritual growth and guidance in these  troubled times.

Who are we? Why so  we so often fall short of our goals for ourselves  and others? By seeking to understand our  limitations and accept the inevitably of failure and pain,  we being to ease the hurt and move toward a  greater sense of serenity and self-awareness.  The Spirituality Of Imperfection brings  together stories from many spiritual and  philosophical paths, weaving past traditions into a  spirituality and a new way of thinking and living that  works today. It speaks so anyone who yearns to find  meaning within suffering. Beyond theory and  technique, inside this remarkable book you will find a  new way of thinking, a way of living that enables  a truly human existence.

Product Description

From Library Journal

The aim of this book is to explain the underlying spiritual--although not necessarily religious--principles of Alcoholics Anonymous. Part 1 presents the emphasis of this spirituality, which is the recognition and especially the acceptance of humans as imperfect beings. Part 2 tells how the founders of AA put spirituality to use. Part 3 discusses the benefits: release, gratitude, humility, tolerance, and forgiveness. On nearly every page, the authors retell stories and provide anecdotes from various sources: ancient Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Greek, and more. One need not have an interest in AA to benefit from this fine introduction to spirituality. This is recommended.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Spirituality GPS for the Imperfect Aug 11 2012

Authors Ernest Kurtz and Katherine Ketchum remind us that none of us are perfect and if we were, we would have no need for spirituality. Using the principle tool of story telling, the authors make a compelling case for us to accept our imperfection and to embrace it as a means of developing compassion both for ourselves and for others in the world. The book begins by defining spirituality, reminding us that it is neither synonymous with religion nor therapy. (As one of the quotes in the book states, "religion is for people who don't want to go to hell; spirituality is for people who have already been there.") In the first part of the book, using ancient teachings especially from Judaism, the authors explain how spirituality is not a solitary pursuit, but rather is something that finds its meaning in community with others. The second part of the book explores the discoveries of twelve step programs and their practical, non-academic approach to defining and discovering spirituality. In one important revelation it cautions that those who possess a strong sense of spirituality are those who put on no airs and who adopt a persona of unassuming humility, not as monks, but as ordinary helpers of their fellow man. Part three of the book talks about experiencing spirituality and it is in this part that some real gems are found, as the authors talk practically about such important subjects as resentment and forgiveness, gratitude, humility and tolerance.

Those with any sort of twelve step background will especially enjoy and appreciate this book. Those with strongly held and fixed religious beliefs may not take to the book as well. Parts of the book can be a labourious read, but whether one is searching for answers to personal issues, or simply has an interest in spirituality and morality, the authors offer an interesting and thought provoking perspective.

A great book. It has helped me to realize that I cannot expect myself to be perfect. It is unreasonable to have that expectation as it is impossible to achieve. I am more at peace with myself and more inclined to accept myself as I am.... imperfect but a good person.
