"And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates on the hem of the robe all around between the pomegranates:" -- Exodus 39:25 (NKJV)

Can there be any doubt that turning the inimitable private detective Isaac Bell into a spy chaser is going to be good for this series? I think The Spy rings the bell in making for a more entertaining story than merely tracking down brainy, greedy thieves as occurred in The Chase and The Wrecker. I especially enjoyed a deeper sense of the international diplomatic and naval tensions in the pre-World War I era. The references to developing technology are also very interesting, even if they concern ways of doing things that are now long obsolete.

The story was also enhanced by having a deeper nautical theme than the earlier two Isaac Bell novels. Mr. Cussler's imagination seems to be artificially restrained when he's stuck on land.

The ultimate identify of the master spy is held back until late in the story, which added a lot more entertaining suspense for me.

My main regret was that the book's action wasn't as concentrated as is desirable for a thriller. If the book had been a little more in that direction, I would have given it a standing ovation. As it was, I think I can hear a the sound of bells tinkling as more entertainment awaits us while Isaac Bell attempts to save the world in the future.

Okay - so how far can you go with Dirk Pitt. Cussler had to branch out with more story lines. First he stuck to NUMA - now with Isaac Bell you have a new larger than life hero. Boats, trains, submarines and early cars (of course there needs to be a car) as well as an engaging villain and hero. Well spun tale that doesn't take too long to read either.

Isaac Bell does it again, and saves the day and the future of the early USN prior to the first World War. Some really nasty bad guys in this one, and some interesting twists and turns that will leave you wanting to keep reading well into the night. A few characters were a little weak, as they just seemed a little unbelieveable for the times. Still, it was a great story.

I have to confess I'm a sucker for Clive Cussler books ... For me they are the right blend of intrigue, suspense and humour. This book is no exception!
