Another Incredible Installment of The Stand, Aug 6 2011
By J. Hill - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Stand: No Man's Land (Hardcover)
Marvel's adaptation of The Stand has been near-perfect, with dazzling artwork and fantastic writing. The 'No Man's Land' run upholds the high quality of the series and moves the plot into the final stage of rising action leading up to the climax (SPOILERS ahead if you haven't read the book). This arc is bookended by Nadine's final attempt to be with Larry before giving herself to Harold in the first issue, and Stu, Larry, Glen, and Ralph leaving Boulder for Las Vegas and a showdown with Flagg at the end. In between, you have the recruiting and training of the three Free Zone spies, Harold's maniacal construction of a bomb, the Free Zone getting power back on, the disastrous Committee meeting where Harold's bomb kills Nick and several others, and the return of Mother Abigail, who utters her final prophecies before dying. Not only is it great seeing many of these scenes illustrated for the first time, but also seeing visual interpretations of key scenes that are different from those in the TV movie that was made. Some highlights include the alluring illustrations of Nadine as she seduces Harold, the explosion during the Committee meeting, and the scene in the vacant drive-in lot where Nadine hears Flagg's voice coming from all of the speakers. That last one in particular is chilling. It's also cool to see small details from the book that were left out of the movie, like Stu seeing Jim Morrison at the service station in Arnette and Nadine's creepy girlhood experience with a Ouija board. As for the writing, so many of Stephen King's original lines are intact that you never lose the feel of the novel, which is one of the best parts of the series for me. The final stand is now around the corner as Stu, Larry, Glen, and Ralph walk west.
