Book Description

Sept. 16 2008 Vagabond
• Featuring artwork from the 32+ volume manga series - Vagabond is on Japan’s top ten best seller’s list with over 100 million volumes in print.
• Vagabond has sold over 22 million copies worldwide! (Not including Japan’s sales).
• Vagabond is based on the novel, Musashi by Eiji Yoshikawa. Originally written in the early 40’s, Yoshikawa’s fictional account became so well known that his version has blurred fact from fiction.
• VIZ Media is currently releasing the English translated edition of Vagabond only three months apart from the Japanese release!
• The popularity of Vagabond has been attributed for the reason NHK produced its period drama TV series based on Yohikawa’s novel.
• There have been 6 films and 2 TV series based on Miyamoto Musashi’s life.
• Inoue received the 2000 Media Arts award for manga from the Japanese Ministry of Culture and the Kodansha award for best manga for his work on Vagabond.
• Nominated for 2003 Eisner Award in the category for Best Writer/Artist!
• "...reads like an Akira Kurosawa film captured on the printed page." -Cliff Biggers, Comic Buyer's Guide
• Inoue has personally created licensed merchandise on a small scale, so that the products will meet his standards of quality.
• Inoue’s previous series Slam Dunk has over 100 million copies in print worldwide.
• Everything Takehiko Inoue has published has hit the top ten sales list in Japan.

Sumi presents Inoue's magnificent pen and brush work in black and white. It also includes a behind the scenes look at Vagabond with rough sketches and photos of Inoue's studio.

In a recent interview, Takehiko Inoue claimed that in his first major follow-up to Slam Dunk, he wanted to delve as deeply as possible into visual artistry. The result was the incredibly realized world of Vagabond, the Sistine Chapel of manga. This artbook captures the very best of Inoue's work, with images hand-selected by Inoue himself. Not one to skimp on reproduction and image quality, Inoue also hand selected the specific printer.

5.0 out of 5 stars A showcase of manga prowess Feb. 12 2009
By Parka HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER
Format:Paperback
Length: 0:26 Mins
The edition published by Viz Media is soft cover with a dust jacket. But the cover is actually quick thick and hardy. There are 164 pages to give this book a nice thickness.

This is the art book by Inoue Takehiko. It's based off the manga Vagabond. If you like the manga and the line art, this book is definitely for you. It contains many black and white full page illustrations, some of which comes from panels in the comic book.

The illustrations, when blown up to full page, show an incredible amount of detail. I'm talking about details in brush strokes, textures, line art and cross hatching. It's a showcase of technical prowess with manga ink. Every page is a delight.

At the end of the book are two very interesting pages. One is a full page photo of his workplace. The other is a collage of photos on his tools. There is a Stevie Wonder CD among his collection of CDs.

This book has no captions. It doesn't need them.

Fans of Inoue Takehiko or his comic should find this book very satisfying.

There are two art books released based on the Vagabond comic. This is one of them. The other is called Water: Vagabond Illustration Collection which contains water colour illustrations. Check out the my review for that too.

There are more pictures of the book on my blog. Just visit my Amazon profile for the link.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Da Vinci of Comics Sept. 15 2008
By Bruno Marisi - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Before having this set of artbooks in my sweaty, trembling hands, I used to think that Takehiko Inoue was one of the greatest comic artist of the last couple of decades. Now I see what a fool I was: Inoue is in fact the best comic artist of all time.

No Katsuhiro Otomo, no Moebius, no Manara, no Frank Miller (in the good old days), no Bradstreet, no Kirby, no Breccia (Sr), no Tezuka, no Lee, no Hitch, no Cassaday or Quitely can top this unleashed beast of pencils, inks and brushes that Takehiko Inoue is.

This man is the Leonardo Da Vinci of comics.

Now let's talk about the editions, and let's talk about the set of them, because it's nonsense to only buy one, you have to have both.

These editions are from another planet. And that's it. Never before have I seen such a printing quality in my life. The definition and sharpness of those images will just cut you to the very bone, just as deep Musashi would. The effort that the people of Viz put in these books is really commendable: the moment I opened them I was struck by an intensity of black so pure and strong that I felt I was looking at the fu**ing originals.

And the COLORS... I won't even talk about the colors, because there is no point in describing them: I could waste an entire dictionary of adjectives and never get close to make justice to this palette and the quality of its impression. These color, you have to see them for yourself.

I know I may sound excessive, but I repeat you, the quiality of this printings is superior to anything I've seen before (not even in Taschen deluxe editions can beat The Water and The Sumi).

The paper, of course, is beautiful, as white as it gets. And the smells is splendid, too.

Oh, one last thing... these books are not hardcovers. However, the sleeves -of very nice quality- are much more thick than any given paperback. So all in all, it's a perfect edition and this should not frighten you away from getting them. The price is more than fair, believe me, now that I've seen it for myself, I'd be willing to pay for this set with my very own internal organs.

4.0 out of 5 stars An expressive display of sumi (ink) art by Vagabond manga artist Inoue Takehiko. Aug. 11 2013
By blauereiter - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
To see more pictures from the book, please visit my blog via my Amazon profile link.

Sumi (meaning "ink" in Japanese) is the companion art book to Vagabond manga artist Inoue Takehiko's "Water".

Just as Water is dedicated to the artist's watercolor works, Sumi is a collection of his monochrome illustrations done in ink. The books complement each other in style; the subdued and soft look of watercolor against the bold and energetic strokes of Japanese ink.

Like Water, the entire art book is free from text of any kind (save for a few parting words by the artist at the end of the book) and is packed with gorgeous artwork from cover to cover.

Highly recommended.
5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Artbook Jan. 11 2014
By Helen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I had order both Water and Sumi artbook from Takehiko Inoue because he's' one of my favorite artist. When it came to my door and open the package, there was some dent on the corner of the book, but I didn't mind. Oh man, when I open both water and sumi, I was so captivated to see many of the illustration that can be found in the manga in large scale size. You can see alot of the detail more closely and appreciate the markmenship of Takehiko's illustration skills. I dont regret throwing my money for these artbook. Great buy!

This artbook is amazing. If you read Vagabong but haven't bought this yet, your collection is incomplete.
It's worth every penny.
