Some summers are just destined to be pretty

Belly measures her life in summers. Everything good, everything magical happens between the months of June and August. Winters are simply a time to count the weeks until the next summer, a place away from the beach house, away from Susannah, and most importantly, away from Jeremiah and Conrad. They are the boys that Belly has known since her very first summer -- they have been her brother figures, her crushes, and everything in between. But one summer, one wonderful and terrible summer, the more everything changes, the more it all ends up just the way it should have been all along.

Review

"This book has what every girl wants in a summer." -- Sarah Dessen, author of Just Listen and Lock and Key

"The Summer I Turned Pretty offers a hard-to-resist combination -- a beach house, summer love, enduring friendship. A deliciously sweet read." -- Deb Caletti, author of Honey, Baby, Sweetheart and Wild Roses

"If I could live inside this amazing book, I would. I would inhale the ocean air and soak up the sun, and I would hang out all day with kind-wonderful-funny-awkward Belly and her two known-'em-forever buds, Jeremiah and Conrad. I'd watch the three of them stop being kids and start being more...and I'd hope hope hope that when Belly falls in love -- 'cause you know she will -- she'd give her heart to the exact right boy." -- Lauren Myracle, author of the ttyl series and Bliss

"This well-written coming-of-age story introduces 15-year-old Isabel, aka Belly, for whom summer has always been the most important time of year. Han (Shug) realistically balances Belly's naïveté with her awareness of the changes the years have brought. Han's novel offers plenty of summertime drama." -- Starred review from Publishers Weekly

"Belly's dawning awareness of her sexuality and that of the boys is a strong theme, as is the sense of summer as a separate and reflective time and place. Readers get glimpses of kisses on the beach, her best friend's flirtations during one summer's visit, a first date." -- Kirkus Reviews

(May Contain Spoilers)

Every summer Belly spends it at Cousin's Beach with her mother and brother along with her mother's best friend and her two boys, Conrad and Jeremiah. It might be the last summer where they will all be together as both Steven and Conrad are going off to college. It's also the summer when Belly finally turns sixteen and she hopes this will be the summer when Conrad finally notices her.

The story was very realistic with a more serious tone and basically not your typical fluffy summer read. To Belly this might be the last of the perfect summers she's had at Cousin's Beach. She's growing up and doesn't want to be seen as the tag-a-long little sister anymore. She's getting more attention from boys but the one person who Belly's wants to notice her has been acting indifferent to her. Everything at Cousin's Beach is not what they used to be as both the relationship dynamics and people are changing.

I fell in love with the story and the characters. The story switches between the present and the past where Belly recounts events of past summers spent at the beach. I really liked the flashbacks as it shows the depth of the story and the characters along with the relationship between Belly and them.

For me this is an absolute summer must read with a laid back story that is perfect for those lazy Sunday afternoons.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Summer book 1 Sep 14 2010
By The Crescive Library TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Hardcover
Summary: Every summer since she was born Belly has spent it at the beach house with her two best friends Conrad and Jeremiah. Despite always being in love with Conrad, the boys have seen her as nothing but a little sister. Yet the summer before her 16th birthday everything changes, and the boys start looking at her a little differently. In the midst of summer, sand and heartbreak, Belly must finally decide where her heart belongs.

Review: Han did a beautiful job at creating a warm and inviting story. One of the best parts of this novel is Han's ability to capture the excitement and anticipation of heading somewhere familiar for the summer. Anyone who looks forward to the summer and the adventures it holds will find a place in this book. It was a fast paced novel with a lot going with respect to relationships unfolding. I wasn't able to connect very well to Belly, but perhaps a younger reader would. I also wasn't a huge fan of her boy choice, but I don't doubt many readers will absolutely fall in love with these boys and Belly. A great summer read.

Belly lives for the Summer. To her, the months in between summer are nothing but passing time until the next summer starts. Summer is a time that everything happens, and when Belly is happiest.

Most summer's are the same . Driving down to the beach house with her mother and brother, Steven, swimming at night when she can't sleep, but finally, one summer, everything changes.

When Belly gets to the beach house, the boys she's known forever - Jeremiah and Conrad, who've been her crushes and brother figures all at once - look at her differently. They don't just treat her like one of the guys anymore. Conrad smokes now, and he quit the football team, something that Belly never saw coming. His brother, Jeremiah, is now a jock.

Belly wonders how everything has changed so quickly.

But when things start to change, they eventually end up just as they should have been all along. THE SUMMER I TURNED PRETTY is a wonderfully written novel that you won't want to put down!
