3.0 out of 5 stars Go for the Unabridged - Brooks Deserves Better, Feb 1 2009
By Ken Koncerak - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Sword of Shannara/The Elfstones of Shannara/The Wishsong of Shannara (Audio Cassette)
The product I listened to was the 1993 edition of The Sword of Shannara Trilogy by Dove Audio. It came on 6 cassettes and was abridged. The trouble with any abridgement is that it is not what the author intended. With this in mind, I found this edition a major disappointment (even with the outstanding narration by Theodore Bikel). I have never read this series and I picked up this edition to get caught up on some reading. I found the stories difficult to care about and felt I was missing a lot from some of the supporting characters. The ending of each book did have a pleasant twist and I bet the unabridged books are far superior. Read The Hobbit first and then the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien. Then I would suggest that you bypass this edition and read Brooks' trilogy in its unabridged form.

5.0 out of 5 stars ****, Nov 2 2004

This was an appaling read, and I reccomend that you buy this. I could put it down whenever I wanted, but the fast paced action just made me keep hold of it. I have never read a better book in my life and I think that you should buy twelve copies, for a laugh.
