Book Description

The RZA, founder of the Wu-Tang Clan, imparts the lessons he's learned on his journey from the Staten Island projects to international superstardom. A devout student of knowledge in every form in which he's found it, he distills here the wisdom he's acquired into seven "pillars," each based on a formative event in his life-from the moment he first heard the call of hip-hop to the death of his cousin and Clan- mate, Russell Jones, aka ODB. Delivered in RZA's unmistakable style, at once surprising, profound, and provocative, The Tao of Wu is a spiritual memoir the world has never seen before, and will never see again. A nonfiction Siddhartha for the hip-hop generation, it will enlighten, entertain, and inspire.

About the Author

The RZA is most famous as the founder and leader of the Wu-Tang Clan, the platinum-selling hip-hop group that is widely considered one of the most important of all time, and has also spanned multiplatinum solo careers for many of its members, including RZA. Originally from Staten Island, he is currently based in Los Angeles, where he has continued his music career while successfully branching out into lecturing, television, and film.

Really enjoyed this book! I downloaded it on my Kindle and read it fast (short book) for an old school Wu-tang fan it was great to see the story unfold. I felt so uplifted about this book in a positive way that I ordered the paperback copy and delivered it to my Brother who received it on his birthday. Overall the book is "li qi" Skill!

3.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expected, Mar 27 2011
Ce commentaire est de: The Tao of Wu (Paperback)
While I was very excited to discover this book, after reading it I must say it isn't really what I expected.

I figured this would be a cool introduction to Taoist teachings, (a sort of Tao of Pooh for the modern homeboy, if you will.) Now as the RZA explains early in the book Taoism doesn't prevent one from integrating teachings from other belief systems, but RZA talks more about Islam, Christianity and numerology throughout the whole book. Halfway through I resigned myself to the fact this wasn't the intro to Taoism I thought it would be and read it as a sort of biography of RZA and his interesting personal version of spirituality, which somewhat helped redeem it.

Recommended if you're interested in learning more about Wu Tang and RZA, less so if you're interested in learning about Taoism.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Messenger or The Message?, Aug 9 2010
Ce commentaire est de: The Tao of Wu (Hardcover)
I have only a passing knowledge of the Wu Tang Clan and RZA's work, mostly through 'Ghost Dog' and a few later bits. My all time favorite track is 'Chrome Wheels'. Bang that s**t retarded. From what little I've heard, I think he's one of the greatest, most musical beat-makers of all time.

I picked up this book on recommendation from a friend, and read it faster than I've ever read a book in my life. It is thin and a super easy read, for one. But it's also because it has a nice balance of straight talk, religious reference, kung-fu storytelling and the philosophy of creative living. RZA never stays anywhere for too long, which might be only mildly frustrating, but it's written with a lot of heart. When you have that in a book, any other limitations can easily fall away. The fact that there are contradictions in things he says at different parts of the book is mostly a testament to his honesty. It's as RZA himself asks in the book - "Do you believe in the messenger or the the message?". Jury is still out on that one for me, but it's an important distinction to make in this age of artist and celebrity worship. Also in the context of the book, as RZA is always to careful to show that he interprets the lessons he learns in his own way.

The fact that RZA came from where he did, achieved what he did, and came out the other side with a tremendous wisdom and heart doesn't erase the fact that he hurt many people along the way, talked a lot of bulls**t and fooled himself and others around him. But it's important to think about how you do the same when you read this book. It's how you follow your actions up today that is most important. This book is all about the crucial stages of reflection and action. He talks a lot about knowledge and wisdom, but it's the latter part of the book where he gets down to being aware of himself as a loving human being that hits the hardest. The man has heart. The world of hip hop has needed an icon like this BADLY. I'd like to know of others if there are some.

RZA has all the wealth and security he'll ever need, but don't let that distract you from his words of wisdom. The path of love doesn't need your money. Come to think of it, RZA probably doesn't either. So whatever way you get your hands on it, you should definitely read this book. And then give it to a friend.
