Schwarzenegger/Biehn/Hamilton ~ Terminator

Amazon.ca

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

There have been so many iterations and "editions" of this and the second movie, it's actually hard to keep track. . of which edition has what OR the amount of money left in your pocket after you buy every single edition known to man. What I can say about this particular installment is; if you don't own this first movie on blu-ray yet, this version is definitely worth it. I'm a big fan of the "plus book" edition's. The quality of the information inside can vary from awesome-for-just-a-movie-keepsake, to yeah-I-knew-that-already if you're already a fan of the movie. I would have to say this one here lacks any real trivia or lesser-known facts about the movie, but does include a nice, short essay about sci-fi movies and where the Terminator ranks and how it "changed Hollywood forever".
I won't bother reviewing the movie. If you haven't seen, why in the hell would you be reading this when you could be watching a classic movie you've never seen before?!?
But I will touch on the transfer of this movie. I only own one version of this movie on DVD (as opposed to the four I have of the sequel) that came out years upon years ago when DVD was a relatively new thing, and MGM still a big company and had the rights of movies to sell them. It was better than the used VHS copy i had, but not by much. The 5.1 surround was "awesome" for the time, but listening to it now is almost painful.
This blu-ray is absolutely fantastic! The movie does not look as old as it is, but does not suffer from any real edge enhancement that is so popular today for some reason. The soundtrack is now uncompressed 5.1, and although some of the special effects might sound just a tad "dated", there's depth and feel to the music/speech/effects that were not there in the DVD from over a decade ago.

If you haven't seen this I definitely recommend the film to any science-fiction fan.

As for the Blu Ray release in question here, everything is well-updated from earlier DVD releases.

Sharp, clear and an overall great effort on the transfer.

"The machines rose from the ashes of the nuclear fire. Their war to exterminate mankind had raged for decades, but the final battle would not be fought in the future.

It would be fought here, in our present.

Tonight."

This is what appears on-screen at the beginning of this exhilarating sci-fi action movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Bien, and Linda Hamilton. It was directed by James Cameron.

A cyborg assassin, a Terminator or a T-100, Model 101 (Schwarzenegger) is sent back in time from the year 2029 to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Hamilton). Kyle Reese (Bien) is the human soldier from the future who is sent back to protect Sarah from the T-100.

What makes this movie so appealing (to me at least) is the story. It's a well-executed science fiction movie with plenty of action. Bien and Hamilton actually make the story work with Schwarzenegger looking the part of a menacing human-shaped, indestructible robot.

Schwarzenegger speaks 76 words in this movie--many with an Austrian accent!

Schwarzenegger, as well, does not appear in this film's last 15 minutes.

However, the public was mesmerized with his part and, as they say, the rest is history,

Both the special effects and background music add to each scene.

This film was not expected to be either a commercial or critical success, but it topped the box office for two weeks and helped launch the career of Cameron and solidify that of Schwarzenegger.

Finally, the DVD (the one released in 2007) has only one extra: a theatrical trailer.

In conclusion, this is the movie to see if you appreciate good science fiction!!

(1984; 1 hr, 43 min excluding end credits; 28 scenes; wide screen, rated 'R')

Before Avatar, James Cameron was king of high budgets and planetary successes by no stretch of the imagination. Terminator takes the usual slasher movie formula and spins it on its head, replacing it with an android and a future storyline about android armageddon and human genocide. Just replace Arnold with any serial killer and you have an almost exact replica of either Halloween, Friday the 13th or any other, funny as it may be to read. This is easily one of Cameron's strongest entries in his career, with suspense, horror elements, comedy and more, all mixed with dark, gritty and completely 80s results. At the time, the fact Arnold was a Terminator was a twist reveal, but of course, 30 years later, it may not be of much surprise after its three sequels.

Those who own the previous blu-ray might want to ditch it completely for its transfer wasn't the best. Here, we have a much better picture resolution, details, textures and color balance.

Also, anyone who still owns MGM's 2001 special edition DVD should definitely keep it since most of the special features on it are NOT on the blu-ray.

A classic of science-fiction and an establishing movie for Arnold Schwarzenegger, this was a real calling card for James Cameron and a precursor of many things to come in his career.
