Schwarzenegger/Biehn/Hamilton ~ Terminator

Amazon.ca

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in Alien, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. --Anne Hurley --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Great quality transfer, THE one the fans have been waiting for. SOME scenes look so realistic you feel the movie was made yesterday ; ). This is the version to own !

I had seen numbers 2 and 3 of the series but not this one and so was interested in going back to the origins after watching the latest installment: Terminator Salvation. I understand now why it was critically praised and strong enough to launch a franchise. It also helped very much into understanding some aspects of the last film. Actually, the first Terminator struck me at how internally logical it was in its fictional concept which is not an easy thing to do considering the inherent pratfalls whenever time travel is involved. It just consistently made sense compared to the plot holes of Salvation.

The action was obviously much lower-budget but it felt right and it looked good. The director James Cameron filmed some very effective stunts that still hold up today. You could always tell what was going on and follow the action. The terminator was an imposing menacing presence. Arnold Schwarzenegger in the title role played it without showing any emotion (which makes sense) while his massive physique, ponderous movements and plastic looks (he does look artificial sometimes!) sell the character. You could nitpick that the head of Arnold was obviously replaced by a fake head sometimes (mirror scene) but weirdly it kinda worked anyway into making him more creepy. The other main roles, Sarah Connor and Reese, were played just right showing enough emotion without going into overexagerated melodrama. They were believable and likable.

Since I already knew most of the twists, from having seen the later movies, it is difficult for me to comment on them. However, I must say they were well implemented and must surely have been effective back then. The story was quite interesting and the glimpses of the future were particularly engrossing.

If you haven't seen this I definitely recommend the film to any science-fiction fan.

As for the Blu Ray release in question here, everything is well-updated from earlier DVD releases.

Sharp, clear and an overall great effort on the transfer.

There have been so many iterations and "editions" of this and the second movie, it's actually hard to keep track. . of which edition has what OR the amount of money left in your pocket after you buy every single edition known to man. What I can say about this particular installment is; if you don't own this first movie on blu-ray yet, this version is definitely worth it. I'm a big fan of the "plus book" edition's. The quality of the information inside can vary from awesome-for-just-a-movie-keepsake, to yeah-I-knew-that-already if you're already a fan of the movie. I would have to say this one here lacks any real trivia or lesser-known facts about the movie, but does include a nice, short essay about sci-fi movies and where the Terminator ranks and how it "changed Hollywood forever".
I won't bother reviewing the movie. If you haven't seen, why in the hell would you be reading this when you could be watching a classic movie you've never seen before?!?
But I will touch on the transfer of this movie. I only own one version of this movie on DVD (as opposed to the four I have of the sequel) that came out years upon years ago when DVD was a relatively new thing, and MGM still a big company and had the rights of movies to sell them. It was better than the used VHS copy i had, but not by much. The 5.1 surround was "awesome" for the time, but listening to it now is almost painful.
This blu-ray is absolutely fantastic! The movie does not look as old as it is, but does not suffer from any real edge enhancement that is so popular today for some reason. The soundtrack is now uncompressed 5.1, and although some of the special effects might sound just a tad "dated", there's depth and feel to the music/speech/effects that were not there in the DVD from over a decade ago.

what can one say about this movie.i mean it's a true classic, and was
way ahead of it's time,in terms of its vision.it launched director
James Cameron's career into high gear.it made a big household name of
of Arnie.his performance in this movie is pitch perfect as the title
character,an unstoppable killing machine.Linda Hamilton and Michael
Bien are also good.the effects were pretty good for the time,i
think, though there weren't that many.there is even a bit of humour in
the mix, with some great, memorable one liners.the movie definitely
leaves an impact, and has had a huge influence in popular culture, even
to this day.my vote for The Terminator is a very strong 4/5

Don't be deceived by the new cover. This "new release" with a new cover is THE SAME terrible blu-ray disc previously released by MGM. The video quality is awful. Shame on those who practice the art of deception and get away with it. Now you have been warned.

If you're a fan of the Terminator films you should consider getting this. The audio and sound is great, and its finally got some decent bonus features (including deleted scenes finally)! I was not disappointed with this at all!
