5.0 out of 5 stars A good, fascinating read, April 4 2010
By I. Cash - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Red Thumb Mark (Paperback)
The Red Thumb Mark is one of the Thorndyke mystery stories. Though the story takes place over 100 years ago, Thorndyke uses surprisingly sophisticated forensic methods to solve his cases. This book gives the reader a glimpse into the past in an easy-to-read, entertaining story.

Many of the Thorndyke mysteries are out of print or hard to find. This newer edition is not a poorly scanned copy of an older book like many others out there - it is a very nicely put together book, with good formatting and detail. This makes it even more pleasurable to read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Only the manner of Love-Making is Dated, Jun 10 2010
By drkhimxz - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Red Thumb Mark (Paperback)
I'll take as given that you have read the editorial summary by the Amazon critic. In answer to the question as to whether there is anything dated about the book, my answer would be, no....but. Language and writing styles change.
This book was written in an era in which no writer for a general audience would be allowed an F word or a C word nor precise or joking reference to the anatomical appendages and cavities by which part of the sexual act is conducted.
Despite these differences, the author can understood without difficulty while any reader who cares to can easily translate lovemaking in an older non-sexual literary manner with the modern cliches which so increase sales today. What Freeman does is give us some rich characters, pose a forensic problem for his hero, Dr. John Thorndyke (medical researcher and attorney), to solve. The solution is then spelled out in detail in testimony before the court. The fact that someone like myself, impatient of such technical matters, still found pleasure, is some sign of his ability to handle the human elements. For the many who delight in empirical scientific analysis this book should be quite a bit more satisfying than even I found it to be. All in all, this is a good reminder that while superficialities do date pedestrian detective and mystery stories, the good ones still reward the reader who can find a copy to read.
Three cheers for the publisher,

5.0 out of 5 stars A crime novel, a scientific puzzle, and a love story all in one, April 7 2012

This review is from: The Red Thumb Mark (Paperback)
Dr. Thorndyke stories appeared as early as 1905, but this is the fist complete novel, published in 1907. The Red Thumb Mark has the foggy atmosphere and charming diction of a classic Victorian mystery - but A. Austin Freeman made an original contribution to the genre with his scientific detective.

Dr. Thorndyke has developed a unique expertise in medical jurisprudence. In the mysterious upper floor of his chambers hides a chemical laboratory, a workshop, and a high-tech photography studio. Thorndyke is so fascinated with crime detection that he has devised (on paper) a number of ingenious crimes - as well as methods for tracking the criminals. Freeman, himself a doctor, went through the same exercise - which may be why his Dr. Thorndyke mysteries feel so believable.

In this novel, a bloody thumbprint at the scene of a crime points to young Reuben Hornby as the perpetrator of a particularly despicable theft. And yet Reuben swears he's innocent. Dr. Thorndyke takes the case because he believes the young man. But how can he disprove the seemingly irrefutable evidence of the thumbprint?

The intense interest of The Red Thumb Mark comes from observing the handsome and secretive doctor at work. Thorndyke employs a down-and-out doctor friend for fact gathering, and it's fun to follow the interplay between these two, so different in temperament.

I was delighted with the clever (and humorous) courtroom scene where Dr. Thorndyke unveils his findings. And I was charmed by the love story that builds throughout the plot to a surprising denouement. The Resurrected Press edition, by the way, is nicely produced and very readable.

After this deeply satisfying reading experience, I intend to read every Dr. Thorndyke novel I can find.
