Book Description

June 21 2004
In the small Hampshire village of Sowerbridge, Irish labourer Patrick O’Riordan has been arrested for the brutal murder of elderly Lavinia Fanshaw and her live-in nurse, Dorothy Jenkins. As shock turns to fury, the village residents form a united front against Patrick’s parents and cousin, who report incidents of vicious threats and violence. But friend and neighbour Siobhan Lavenham remains convinced that Patrick has fallen victim to a prejudiced investigation and, putting her own position within the bigoted community in serious jeopardy, stands firmly by his family in defence of the O’Riordan name. Days before the trial, terrible secrets about the O’Riordans’ past are revealed to Siobhan, and the family’s only supporter is forced to question her loyalties. Could Patrick be capable of murder after all? Could his parents’ tales of attacks be devious fabrications? And if so, what other lies lurk beneath the surface of their world? As the truth rapidly unfurls, it seems that Sowerbridge residents need to be very afraid. For beneath a cunning façade, someone’s chilling ambition is about to ignite...

realist people, location.Story develops slowly and keeps you guessing til the end. I am a fan of Minette Walters books and was just a little disappointed that this one is rather short - but to the point.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the $ Aug. 1 2008

Minette Walters is one of my favorite authors, I have enjoyed to a greater or lesser degree every one of her other books. But this is more short story than novel, so while it is fast paced, even perhaps a little memorable, it isn't worth the cost. It is a British-published book, which no doubt accounts for it's high price, but I wish I'd spent my hard earned money on a book that entertained me for a longer time.

I did enjoy reading this, but the length does not justify the original retail price. So buy a used one like I did and i think you will be happy with it.

2.0 out of 5 stars way too short Nov. 15 2007

This story is way too short and not interesting enough to justify buying and shipping costs. If you can borrow it from a friend or library, it's a reasonably good way to kill an hour or so.
4.0 out of 5 stars Short but sweet Minette Walters mystery. May 7 2014
By Susan M. Majesky - Published on

A short story with lots of twists and turns, the Tinder Box is a change from Walters usually full length novels. Interesting, and fun to read, it kept me guessing. I prefer the long novels, but this was a fun read.
2.0 out of 5 stars An average work, that's all Sept. 23 2013

When compared to her CHICKENFEED, this is nothing. Though this one is way too short, there are lots of characters when compared to its length. And the story keeps jumping. At the end the mystery is revealed and I was not amused. An okay read.
