May 1 2005 Owner's and Instruction Manual
At Last! A Beginner’s Guide to Toddler Technology

Just when you’ve mastered your infant’s maintenance routine, he begins to malfunction, refusing fuel, crying inexplicably, and resisting your attempts to clothe him. Your infant has upgraded to a toddler! But how can you master your toddler’s changing technology?

Through step-by-step instructions and helpful schematic diagrams, The Toddler Owner’s Manual explores hundreds of frequently asked questions: How should I react when my toddler throws a tantrum? How do I train my toddler for self–waste disposal? Whatever your concerns, you’ll find the answers here—courtesy of pediatric psychologist Dr. Brett R. Kuhn and co-author Joe Borgenicht. Together, they provide plenty of useful advice for anyone who wants to learn the basics of toddler care.

Review

“I am in love with this book -- the language, the story, the sass. Five women bickering, judging, loving, growing old together. You won’t stop laughing, even when your heart is hurting. Keep a pencil close -- you’ll be underlining all your favorite, funny lines.” (Kathryn Stockett, The Help )

“The women of The Sweet By and By have found a devoted muse in Todd Johnson.” (Alice Walker )

“Read The Sweet By and By…Johnson explores the lives of five Southern women who are unexpectedly connected to each other. While most of the action takes place in a nursing home, their stories never fall short of livelihood. Think of it as Steel Magnolias meets The Golden Girls.” (Real Simple, "Entertainment Picks" )

“Give Todd Johnson an “A”…He made me laugh and cry…Johnson’s...five women...are as convincing as Reynolds Price’s Kate Vaiden and Allan Gurganus’ Lucy Marsden. From the first page they step into your life and start talking pure Southern music.” (Raleigh News & Observer )

“Bittersweet and often humorous...Johnson has a sure ear for Southern speech...the underlying message of the power of love and friendship resonates, as does its depiction of the way in which people leading unremarkable lives can have a tremendous impact on those around them.” (Publishers Weekly )

“Heartfelt and stunning…Mr. Johnson paints a lush portrait of Southern life in vivid detail with clarity and wit. You will be riveted by the story of a group of unlikely friends, five North Carolina women bonded by their shared histories, passions and secrets. It’s a genuine page turner.” (Adriana Trigiani )

“Save a place for this debut novel—essentially a hymn of praise for licensed practical nurses (LPNs)…Johnson does a fine job of illustrating the rich inner lives of those imprisoned by failing mental or physical health…Strongly recommended.” (Library Journal )

“Nothing short of amazing . . . I had a whole new perspective on both living and dying after reading this stunning novel.” (Birmingham News )

“Packed with so much poignancy readers might want to keep tissues handy…heartfelt…realistically portrays the challenges the elderly face and captures the authentic voices of these five very different women. This is a novel not to be missed.” (Las Vegas Review Journal )

“Gentle, sensitive...sometimes funny, occasionally sad, and ultimately life-affirming… Johnson has done an admirable job of making each woman distinct and memorable…the reader will have a clear picture of each in mind—and will feel fond of them..a fine debut. I look forward to seeing what Johnson writes next.” (Winston-Salem Journal )

“Poignant.” (Raleigh News & Observer )

“My favorite book of the past few months . . . As Johnson reveals these women to readers, you discover that he has captured the very souls of women we all know, respect and love.” (Greensboro News & Record )

“Fans of Fried Green Tomatoes will fall headlong into this humorous and heartfelt story . . .The cast handles the profusion of drama, tragedy, humor, and romance with some of the best narration listeners will find anywhere.” (AudioFile Magazine, on the audio edition ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

My husband and I laughed to tears!! Very very very funny! Not so helpful except when you're super tired of your toddler not slepping and, well you know, beying a toddler...it de-dramatizes it all!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must-have for Toddler Owners! Sept. 12 2011
Format:Paperback
Continuing on the success of a Baby Owner's Manual - the Toddler Owner's Manual does not disappoint. Written in the same style & format, it's easy to read and understand, and provides an objective view and information for every Toddler Owner out there.

This books is aimed at Toddlers from the ages of 1-4, and I'm just thrilled that it is for that length of time. I just wish there was an accompanying Toddler Owner's maintenance log - just like the Baby Owner's Maintenance Log. I got in the habit of writing in the Baby one, I'd like to continue on in the same format.

Bottom line: get it - it's money well spent.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for young techie dads! Jan. 11 2007
By Mrs. Nancy Ayers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
When my son-in-law Drew returned from deployment, my grandson was 13 months old. Drew was anxious to get to know his son and help my daughter take care of him, but he had not had much experience with little ones. Drew's catching on real fast, but this book is a help to him. The technical-style language reminds me of my cell phone or computer instruction books (in a humorous way) and is truly geared to a guy's way of thinking. The information is reliable, concise, and organized for quick reference as well as cover-to-cover reading. So if Drew needs to pack a diaper bag for a day trip, or if Ryan gets a boo-boo while mommy's shopping, he has a go-to answer book in the Toddler Ownder's Manual. The author should think about selling this to the Department of Defense to distribute to dads returning home, it should be required reading!

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent Jan. 12 2007
By Isaac Kishk - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This book is very informative in a non-reference kinda way. While it's laid out like a car owners manual, it can be used for direct reference to whatever you are looking for. However, it is also writing chronologically, so that you can start from the beginning, and read along as your baby grows. Its written in a half sarcastic/playful manner which keeps you entertained while learning or verifying information. Definitely something a parent should not go without, if not just for entertainment.

4.0 out of 5 stars toddler owners manual has great info March 24 2007
By Chris - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I like this book, it's written like a car manual except for your toddler. It's funny, and has a lot of great info. I also have the baby owners manual. My husband likes the way it's written also. It's to the point, and you don't have to read through a bunch of stuff to get the info you're looking for.

5.0 out of 5 stars A fun review for grandparents and parents March 13 2010
By Deborah Verlen - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
This is a cute little book that will provide a great review for parents and grandparents about what it means to be a toddler.

The chapters include Updates for Home and Transportation (this was written in 2005, so some of this info is most likely outdated). Chapter two contains General Care and Handling and gives some good ideas for comforting a child, suggestions for toys and travel. Chapter three gives a humorous overview of "Understanding the Toddler's Power Supply" which concentrates on eating and food. Programming the Sleep Mode, chapter four, talks about sleeping patterns. Chapter five concentrates on "General Maintenance and Training" such as reprogramming the child from diapers to "self-waste disposal." You'll find charts and more in Chapter six about "Growth and Development." Chapter seven includes some realistic and proven techniques for "Discipline." Chapter eight concentrates on emergencies and safety.
