Book Description

May 29 2012

A groundbreaking book about personal growth that presents a uniquely effective set of four tools that bring about dynamic change in the present and impart a greater understanding of the depth and complexity of the human condition over the longterm.

The Tools addresses the most common complaint patients have about psychotherapy: the interminable wait for change to begin. Barry Michels, an LA-based therapist, was frustrated by his inability to bring his patients faster relief from the issues that plagued them. He found a mentor in Phil Stutz, a psychiatrist who years before devised a methodology that arose from a similar disenchantment. The traditional therapeutic model sets its sights on the past, but Stutz and Michels employ an arsenal of tools--exercises that access the power of the unconscious and effectively meet the most persistent problems people face--and the results are electrifying. Stutz and Michels are much sought-after--a recent profile in The New Yorker touted them as an "open secret" in Hollywood--and treat a high-powered and creative clientele. Their first work, The Tools transcends the typical self-help genre because of its paradigm-changing material, the credibility of its authors, and the instant appeal and empowerment of its message.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Tools Aug 21 2012
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
This is the most powerful book besides 'As a Man Thinketh' that I have read and am actively using. I have found a way to take myself out of my thinking head into my heart. On the surface the book occurs as another gimmick to quick answers but in fact it takes you from what you 'think you know' to the wonderful domain of being 'don't know that I don't know', where all possibilities lie. I have the experience of truly knowing how to 'be' an active participant in my life. We are all raised with the notion that life lies in the doing and having, this book challenges you to use your higher source 'love'. The tools work and I am grateful; it has and is giving me access to 'fun and freedom' - we are all truly beautifully designed. Tina Fischer - Life Coach - Vancouver Canada

The promo material states that "The Tools transcends the typical self-help genre because of its paradigm-changing material, the credibility of its authors, and the instant appeal and empowerment of its message."

Perhaps... this book is better than much of the self-help genre but hardly paradigm-changing to anybody who knows the field of psychotherapy and psychopathology. Rather, this book outlines principles of change one would expect from a self-help book based on treating celebs -- principally based on quick fixes and psychobabble that is aimed at pleasing your customers, i.e., "patients".

While this material has its place, it hardly scratches the surface in many respects. I suggest that individual seeking self-help consider the more useful, if more challenging, books like David Burns tried and true CBT book for depression, "Feeling Good: The New Mood Therapy" or more recent more empirically based books such as Aaron Beck and Clarks book "The Anxiety and Worry Workbook".

Finally, for individuals with serious psychological difficulties, I suggest they consult a reputable (trust your instincts too) psychotherapist -- somebody licensed.
